Purpose

 

  • To maximize milling throughput and gold recovery at optimum operating costs.
  • To provide technical support to the milling and effluent treatment operation. 
  • To implement new/improved processes which add value to the operation.
  • To manage the Refinery to optimize ounce production and Mill Technical Group to provide value added technical expertise and support for the mill operations.
  • Manage mill consumable budget 
  • Responsible for implementing new projects 
  • Responsible for leading metallurgical and refining team 
  • Provides input and offers his/her expertise and knowledge to the Mill Operations and Metallurgical Superintendent to help support decisions affecting production, maintenance, operational and safety issues  

Dimensions

 

The Senior Metallurgist also interacts with the Geological and Technical Services Group on key projects, providing input to ensure optimum design is achieved.  Also, he/she is responsible for performing scoping tests, participates in pre and full feasibility level studies involving the mill and takes on and manages capital projects as assigned. This position interacts with the following external contacts: Chemical suppliers of mill reagents, consultants with expertise in gold extraction, suppliers of mineral processing.

Essential Duties

 

Safety and Sustainibility Eexpectations:

  • Ensure that all metallurgists, metallurgical technicians/refiners, and summer students are working safely and in compliance with Newmont and site specific safety policies and procedures and all relevant safety legislation.
  • Ensure regulatory and inter-company environmental and safety procedural compliance, including compliance with Newmont Fatality Risk Management (FRM).
  • Ensure new processes or flowsheet modifications are designed with safe operation as the first consideration.
  • Provide training to operations and maintenance in technical areas that involve safety and are beyond the scope of the average plant operator or mechanic. 
  • Ensure that the effluent treatment discharge is in compliance with regulatory limits and provide technical support to the operating group to ensure this is achieved without exception.
  • Ensure a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in the metallurgical laboratory and refinery.
  • Provides technical direction and participates in pre-feasibility and feasibility level studies as assigned. 
  • Ensure the safe, efficient, and cost effective operation and maintenance of the refinery to meet or exceed safety, production and cost targets, while ensuring environmental compliance.

 

Metallurgical Excellence:

  • Supervise Refiner, Metallurgist(s) and Metallurgical Technician(s), as well as summer students under the technical group.  Recruit, set objectives, review and mentor performance of these individuals to maximize value produced from these employees.
  • Budget, plan and implement strategies to maximize gold production at minimum reagent and operating costs.
  • Provide accurate and transparent gold and production accounting.
  • Monitor and control mill reagent costs.
  • Monitor gold production and independent circuit performance.  Implement changes to correct unsatisfactory performance.
  • Work with operators, mill support staff and mill maintenance to implement and maintain systems to control key operating variables affecting production and costs.
  • Provide technical support to the mill groups for troubleshooting of operational problems, or for operational enhancements/excellence.
  • Evaluate and implement projects to improve gold production efficiency and/or reduce costs.
  • Ensure the gold upgrading and shipment functions are completed in a safe, secure and timely manner.

 

Safety Compliance:

  • Responsible to promote, evaluate and monitor safety performance for all direct reports and to take action to reward or correct performance as is required.
  • Responsible for keeping a high standard of housekeeping in the refinery and  metallurgical laboratories.
  • Responds to unusual operating conditions as required to ensure the safety of personnel and limit potential negative impacts on production and costs.
  • Provide technical support to operations and maintenance in situations where chemicals or other safety hazards may present a risk which is not readily apparent to others.

 

Planning:

  • Participate in daily production meetings and weekly mill management meetings.
  • Assist Mill Superintendent and Mill Manager in implementing security processes to meet or exceed Security Standards.
  • Responsible for maintaining metallurgical accounting and reconciliation and ensuring data integrity, traceability and transparency of the process. 
  • Responsible for optimization of gravity recovery, leach extraction, and CIP recoveries.
  • Participate in the preparation of new project budgets.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the Investment Review Paper (IRP) form for new projects.

Training & Experience

 

  • Degree or Technical Diploma in Mineral Processing, Metallurgy, Chemistry
  • Professional engineering designation in Ontario (P.Eng.) would be an asset.
  • 5-8 years of experience in an operating plant as a metallurgist in gold ore processing.
  • 3 years in a leadership role
  • Must have a solid understanding of optimizing mill throughput and gold recovery, and be capable if implementing changes to improve operational results.  
  • Must demonstrate strong leadership abilities and communicate openly
  • Must be an independent self-starter who is capable of initiating change that nets positive results in terms of production and cost management, and improves safety and environmental aspects of the mill. 
  • Must be able to maintain constructive relationships with peers and subordinates.

Working Conditions

 

  • This position is located at the Newmont porcupine gold mines, near Timmins, ON.
  • In this role, you will work 4x3 shift,  As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require relocation.
