Geotechnical Superintendent reports to the Manager of Mine Technical Services. He/she provides safe, economic and practical geotechnical solutions to maintain and improve the stability and integrity of underground excavations, surface excavations and excavated-material storage facilities at Porcupine’s operations.

The successful candidate will manage the geotechnical and backfill programs and staff to support the operating mine sites and tailings facility through direct action (or through subordinates) and will serve as a mentor and trainer for geotechnical and mining engineers.

Porcupine consists of 2 underground operations (Hoyle, Borden), 1 active open pit operation (Hollinger), 1 open pit project (Pamour) and the associated Tailings Storage Facility. The Superintendent ensures adherence to established standards and guidelines and introduces innovation and robust initiatives. He/she should have a good understanding of seismicity, ground control as well as a ground fall risk management strategy.

  • Senior Geotechnical Engineer (Hoyle), crew of 4
  • Geotechnical Technicians (Hollinger)
  • Geotechnical Engineers (Borden)

Purpose

 

Accountable for the delivery of realistic and reliable guidance and designs to ensure stability of excavations in mining plans through engineering design and analysis, supplemented by a robust QAQC program. Establish safe work methods and procedures for all members of the department, for the pursuit of continuous improvement opportunities of mine operations and for the management of the geotechnical workforce and budget.
 

Essential Duties

 

  • Provide governance to ensure compliance with Newmont standards, guidelines and policies
  • Ensure geotechnical and backfill related risks for current and proposed mining areas are analyzed, understood and communicated to key stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the geotechnical group to set and develop geotechnical engineering standards, policies and processes
  • Ensure that accurate and professional geotechnical information and advice provided is clear, precise and delivered in a timely manner to the mine technical services and mine operations teams, and that it is properly implemented on the site
  • Provide design advice to geotechnical/backfill staff to ensure that underground and surface excavation proposals are practical and effective to maximize the recovery of reserves and resources
  • Ensure quality of geotechnical and backfill systems is achieved through maintenance of effective quality control and monitoring programs.
  • Provide technical advice and recommendations on highly specialized or unique technical issues
  • Develop and implement in-house training programs in geotechnical engineering, identify and recommend software and tools for analyses and design
  • Participate in staff technical and professional development in the geotechnical engineering fields
  • Work with the mine operations to define, setup and execute review mechanism of the Ground Control plan to assess risk,
  • Collaborate with Geotechnical Engineering internal Subject Matter Experts (SME) and external consultants
  • Support Responsible Tailings Facility Person in evaluation and review of tailings facility management activities.
  • Continue existing R&D projects while looking for additional opportunities to improve both processes and execution of ground support
  • All tasks related to the exercise of its functions

Training & Experience

 

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Mining Engineering, or related field required
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ operating and/or technical experience in a Geotechnical role required
  • Experience supervising and managing both the work and continual development of technical staff required
  • Registered member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario or meeting all educational and experience requirements to become registered
  • In-depth knowledge of underground mining methods, technology, and best practices required
  • Solid knowledge of surface mining methods and associated slope stability analysis
  • Practical experience with ground support system design and underground excavation stability analysis required
  • Practical experience with numerical software and modeling utilized for stress and deformation analysis and for mine design at a skill level sufficient to train others preferred
  • Practical experience in design of backfill systems and related delivery systems preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an ability to communicate effectively and clearly, in writing and verbally, with all levels of the organization required
  • Team oriented with strong leadership skills and demonstrated commitment to safety and health, and environment excellence along with technical best practices required
  • Ability to think strategically, demonstrate good judgment, strong organizational and planning skills required
  • Ability and willingness to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds required

 

Competencies

  • First hand site experience dealing with geotechnical instability and failures
  • Expert knowledge of geotechnical methods and ground control plans
  • Good knowledge of narrow vein and long-hole mining techniques.  
  • Experience in utilizing backfill for ground control including paste fill
  • Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skills

Working Conditions

 

  • This position part of Newmont's Porcupine mine site near Timmins, ON.
  • In this role, you will work a 4x3 schedule.  As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require you to relocate.
