Purpose

To ensure the safe and efficient operation of the mill, crushing plants and tailing facilities to meet or exceed safety, production, costs and recovery targets, while ensuring OHSA and environmental compliance.
 

Safety and Sustainability Expectations

  • Ensure that all mill employees are trained and their conduct and performance of job duties are in compliance with PGM Health and Safety polices and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.  
  • Ensure that all mill operation employees, summer students, contractors, security and others are working safely & in compliance with PGM safety policies & procedures and all relevant safety legislation.
  • Ensure that the mill operations department and respective work areas are maintained and are in compliance with company Health and Safety polices and the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Ensure that tailing disposal and effluent treatment facilities are operated and maintained in a manner that yields cost effective compliance with all applicable OHSA and environmental regulations.
  • Ensure that employees are kept informed of safety, production, and cost performance statistics, to encourage growth and participation in potential improvements to each KPI.  
  • Provide support to all areas on issues that jointly affect or involve safety and production.
  • Participates as the Mill Management representative on the JHSC. 
  • Ensure compliance with the international cyanide code and that all applicable procedures and policies relating to the code are complied with.

Essential Duties

  • Coordinates meetings to ensure that employees are kept informed of safety, production, and cost performance statistics, to encourage growth and participation in potential improvements to each KPI.
  • Participates as required in the hiring process for both staff and bargaining unit employees within the department to ensure that new hires have the skills, qualifications and competencies required of them to become a contributing member of the mill team.
  • Identifies candidates and focuses training and employee development geared towards having succession plans in place for each crew.
  • Provides a coordination and planning link between the training department to ensure operations personnel are trained according government regulatory requirements, the CBA and as special needs arise.
  • Responsibility for production and execution of the annual operating plan for the mill department.
  • Liaise with Metallurgical department to ensure efficient and cost effective utilization of the mill and crushing facilities
  • Liaise with open pit and underground mine departments to ensure mill activities enhance the efficiency and cost effectiveness of mining operations.
  • Liaise with maintenance and planning personnel to ensure efficient planning and execution of work. 
  • Coordination of production shutdowns and start-ups of Mill and Crushers to minimize the delays. 
  • Has authority for prioritization and scheduling of work to ensure targets are met.
  • Through workplace inspections, interactions, and improvement programs, develops modifications to mill equipment, procedures, and policies to improve safety, increase throughput and reduce costs. Ensures that modifications will be cost effective. 
  • Works closely with the Metallurgical Coordinator and Mill Maintenance Coordinator on enhancement projects and initiatives that will yield benefits. Ensures timely execution of these initiatives. 
  • Accountable for the operation of the tailing disposal and effluent treatment facilities to ensure cost effective compliance with environmental regulations and the tailing management plan. Initiates corrective action when required.
  • Participates in strategic planning and preparation of annual operating budgets.

Training & Experience

  • Degree or Technical Diploma in Mineral Processing, Chemical Engineering or Metallurgy.
  • Minimum 10 years milling and crushing experience.
  • Minimum 5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Advanced Analytical and problem-solving skills 
  • Advanced computer literacy skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook), MS Project, and SAP 
  • A solid background in the operation, maintenance and optimization of crushing and grinding plants, tailing management, and effluent treatment.
  • Must be self-motivated and have the ability to motivate others and initiate change that yields positive results in terms of safety, the environment, production and cost management in the mill area.
  • A solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations for Mines and Mining Plants is essential.
  • Strong background and track record in process control and plant optimization.
  • Ability to promote and lead change and to challenge the status quo.

Working Conditions

This is a site based position supporting our Timmins operations.

The work schedule is 4 days on 3 days off.
