This position reports to and supports the Regional Manager - Control Systems and Instrumentation. Position can be based out at Toronto or Montreal or Vancouver, or other locations close to our operations.



Technical Services provides global support to Newmont and its operating businesses across a range of specialized technical functions. Within Technical Services, the Fixed Plant Control (FPC) Systems team is responsible for maximizing the availability, operability, and effectiveness of all fixed plant process automation systems across Newmont’s mining and processing facilities globally. 

The regional Control Systems and Instrumentation function within the FPC team, is responsible for maintaining and improving the availability, health and integrity of the FPC System infrastructure across multiple sites in the region, to drive exceptional performance across Newmont’s portfolio. It aims to ensure that Newmont’s FPC systems and instrumentation capabilities are a source of sustainable and considerable competitive advantage for Newmont.

The Instrumentation Technical Specialist III is a member of the FPC team in the region and is responsible for ensuring the highest possible integrity of process plant instruments across multiple sites throughout the region.

This position reports to and supports the regional Manager - Control Systems and Instrumentation. 

The Instrumentation Technical Specialist III solves complex problems, evaluates quality and frequency of instrumentation maintenance programs, provides feedback on equipment performance and makes recommendations to Senior Instrumentation Advisors to promote roll-out of Instrumentation global specifications. 

The Instrumentation Technical Specialist III

  • Provides practical, hands-on support to site technicians and assists in the selection, installation and maintenance of instruments, to ensure the accurate, reliable and repeatable performance of measurement and control devices.
  • Develops procedures, maintains records, updates tag and change management databases, amends documents, marks-up drawings and coordinates implementation of equipment trials onsite; and 
  • Coordinates the activities of site instrumentation and control technicians, evaluates new equipment, including measurement and control instruments, laboratory analyzers and test equipment.


Essential Duties



  • Develop and review strategies and procedures to standardize calibration and maintenance practices for instrumentation across multiple Newmont sites regionally.   Manage critical parts and spares to ensure availability and implement strategies to prevent and/or mitigate obsolescence.
  • Review instrumentation selections, verify sizing and suitability according to Design Criteria and Performance Specifications.  Monitor and evaluate performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Support continuous improvement programs and instrumentation projects, collaborate with stakeholders and vendors to implement trials of emerging technology.  Evaluate equipment performance and manage minor projects to support standardization objectives.
  • Ensure instrument documentation (P&IDs, datasheets, instrument list, loop and termination drawings) are revised and being maintained according to auditable industry standards.
  • Support site E&I resources to implement changes to existing plant instrumentation requested through Change Management and Work Order Systems.  
  • Participate in on-the-job supervision, training and mentoring of site supervisors and technicians, ensure calibrations are performed accurately, within specified tolerance to facilitate optimal process performance, production efficiency and safety of personnel.
  • Solve complex measurement and/or control problems.  Assist site supervisors in day-to-day planning of team deployment and allocate work in response to production limiting situations such as breakdowns and control system issues.  

Training & Experience



  • Electrical/Instrumentation trade background is essential. 
  • Certificate IV in Electronics or Process Control or similar certification is desirable.
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or similar certification would be an advantage.



  • 5-7 year's experience in an instrumentation operational or design role in any related industry. 
  • Significant and demonstrable experience in calibration, installation, testing and troubleshooting of industrial instrumentation systems and analytical equipment within an operational processing plant.
  • Knowledgeable in the application of measurement physics applicable to process industries.
  • Experience developing specifications, standards and work procedures.
  • Experience in the execution of minor instrumentation and/or process control projects in Gold Mining or other comparable industry.
  • User level experience with maintenance planning and scheduling systems and inventory control systems such as SAP (preferred) or equivalent systems.
  • Experienced in mentoring and coaching others.
  • Knowledge and understanding of OsiSoft PI application suite desirable Knowledge of Newmont sites and processes, management and business practices would be an advantage.

  • Australia Region:            Boddington, Tanami
  • Latin America Region:     Cerro Negro (Argentina), Penasquito (Mexico), Yanacocha (Peru)
  • North America Region:    Cripple Creek & Victor (USA), Eleonore and Eleonore Underground (Canada), Merian (Suriname), Musselwhite (Canada), Porcupine (Canada)
