Dimensions

 

This position will manage direct reports. Interact with Pit Supervisor, Safety Department, Production Services, as well as Open Pit Engineering, Geology, Maintenance, Electrical, Open Pit General Foreperson Open Pit Superintendent, and Open Pit Manager. Provide daily leadership to pit crew and work with support departments to meet departments' Safety and production objectives. This position reports directly to the Open Pit General Foreperson.

Purpose

 

Ensure that day to day open pit safety and production targets are met related to company and contractor drilling and blasting activities. Organize and supervise pit drillers, and contractor drillers as required. Plan, schedule and coordinate contractor blasting activity to achieve budgeted targets. Partner with support departments to obtain targets (i.e.: geology, survey, maintenance and contractors).   Ensure drilling and blasting is done to engineering specifications.

Essential Duties

 

SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY EXPECTATIONS 

  • Promote Newmont values 
  • Employ proactive activities (leading) indicators to reduce risk and incidents in workplace. 
  • Promote and strive to maintain triple zero statistics following government acts and regulations as well as company procedures and policies.  
  • Monitor and promptly follow up on safety and environmental concerns, communicating results to crew. 
  • Work with drilling and blasting contractors to ensure company standards are understood and followed.  Monitor their safety program to make sure it complies with PGM standards. 
  • Manage drill blast activities to meet Best Management Plan objectives for Hollinger pit 
  • Address community feedback on drill / blast related activity to minimize impact on community.

Key Areas of Responsibility

 

Safety 

  • Zero Harm focus for all employees, contractors and visitors to the site. 
  • Participate in daily tool box and monthly safety meetings reviewing incidents, hazard alerts, procedures, monthly topics and address concerns. 
  • Support and promote leading safety indicators. 
  • Promote and follow IRS and Safety programs. 
  • Address and follow up on issues arising from inspections, audits and employee concerns. 
  • Review log sheets for 5 point safety system issues and address concerns. 
  • Enter incidents into Enablon promptly as well as complete and close out assigned action items. 

 

Production 

  • Assign and communicate job tasks to direct reports and ensure they have proper knowledge, tools and skills to do the job safely. 
  • Liaison with and direct contractor drilling and blasting activities, tracking usage of explosives.  
  • Follow general foreperson log instructions to meet or exceed plan and complete required projects  
  • Organize open pit blasts with contractor ensuring notifications are made, guards in position and gas checks done after the blast. 
  • Complete quality control checks on drilling and blasting to meet engineering design.   Logging of QC data and sign off on drilling and blasts.  
  • Ensure blast matting is properly installed so as to completely eliminate fly rock. 
  • Post blast analysis to review and manage dust, noise and vibrations monitoring to ensure levels are within prescribed limits 
  • Optimize fragmentation/digging and minimize dilution. 
  • Use and assist support staff where needed.  (I.e. survey, engineering, geology, maintenance.) 
  • Attend dig plan and Operating Condition meetings when on shift. 
  • Achieve production targets, maximize efficiency, productivity  and utilization of drill equipment and personnel  
  • Ensure operating conditions are continuously improved. 
  • Complete projects as assigned Tracking of drill consumables and product testing to reduce drilling unit costs 
  • Testing and use of alternative non-explosive type products for breaking rock in unique situations.  

 

Managing People
 

  • Work with surface and hourly trainers to ensure employees are trained in accordance with operational, regulatory and CBA requirements. 
  • Attend meetings for drill maintenance and short term planning. 
  • Ensure employees’ concerns are addressed in a prompt, respectful and constructive manner. 
  • Manage crew according to CBA. 
  • Assist with Pit Supervisor in GPS performance evaluations as required for drillers and labourers. 
  • Update and review of procedures with employees as required. 

Training & Experience

 

  • Grade 12 Minimum or equivalent, diploma in Mine Engineering, Mine Technician or equivalent experience is an asset
  • Minimum 5 years in open pit mining with specific drilling and blasting experience.
  • Minimum 1 year in full-time or spare supervisor’s role.  
  • Mine Engineering, Mine Technician or equivalent experience is an asset 
  • Reading engineering plans, good working knowledge of drilling and blasting pattern design, good knowledge of equipment and procedures, and strong communication skills. 

Working Conditions

 

  • This position is located at the Dome, part of Newmont's Porcupine Mine Site near Timmins, ON.
  • In this role, you will work a 8x6 schedule.  As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require you to relocate.
