About this role
Reporting to the Mine General Manager, the Underground Mine Manager is responsible for the overall management of people, safety, partnerships, and production associated with the Mine Department. This position will direct tactical and strategic mining plans ensuring that departmental performance is executed in a safe and efficient manner. As a member of the Senior Management Team, this role participates in the development and delivery of the site’s strategic business plan.
Your role will consist of
Health & Safety:
- Speak up for health and safety, identify, report and address risks.
- Wear PPE at all times while in development environment.
- Be alert ,observe and report safety incidents and support investigations.
- Ensure that employees and respective work areas are in compliance with all of Newmont health and safety policies and Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act in commission of job duties.
- Report to work physically fit.
- Daily pre-start safety meetings.
- Apply all standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and standard task procedures (STP’s) within development department.
- Complete safety training and certification as required by site and departmental procedure.
Work Responsibilities:
- Ensure the underground mine operates according to company, federal, provincial and municipal standards.
- Participate in strategic planning at the senior management level.
- Develop and meet overall safety, production and cost targets.
- Liaise with cross-functional teams in setting the direction and establishing the mid to long term mine plans.
- Optimize operational assets and resources through continuous improvement.
- Initiate, develop and implement mine policies and procedures.
- Responsible for developing, monitoring and improving the safety performance of all employees.
- Support and maintain value-based Safety Management System that enables a continuous process of identifying and managing hazards/risks, monitoring compliance and engaging employees.
- Ensure JHSEC (Joint Health, Safety & Environment Committee) and employee safety concerns are dealt with in a timely manner.
- Ensure employees have the tools and systems in place to perform work safely and efficiently.
- Ensure employees are developed to reach their full potential and meet organizational goals.
- Implement succession plans for key employees.
- Promote the principle of ownership, accountability and mutual respect to the workforce and supervision.
- Keep employees informed of issues that affect them, ensuring two-way communication.
- Manage key items in all of Newmont’s management systems such as but not limited to SEMS, Enablon, eMesa and S.A.P.
- Promote and adhere to Newmont’s Environmental, Sustainability, and Human Resources polices.
- Develop and adhere to realistic budgets.
- Directly supervise the Mine Coordinators.

Your training, skills, and experience checklist
Knowledge and experience:
- Progressive supervisory experience including (3+) years at the Superintendent level
- Minimum 10-15 years of underground mining experience with progressive supervisory experience (7 years), including a minimum of 3 years as a Superintendent. Previous Mine Manager experience preferred
- Strong business acumen including:
- Cost control (reporting, variance explains, capital management)
- Budgeting (developing budgets, managing budgets)
- Business improvement
- Proficient computer literacy including ERP systems
- Qualifications and certifications in Safety
- A Bachelor or University Degree is preferred – work experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree
Skills and Abilities:

- Strong understanding of Mining Act and legislation
- Good understanding and working knowledge of the applicable legislation and regulations for mines and mining plants.
- Strong business acumen and proficient computer literacy

Working Conditions
- The Musselwhite Gold Mine in northwestern Ontario is a fly-in, fly out operation on the southern shore of Opapimiskan Lake, about 480 kilometres (km) north of Thunder Bay in North West Ontario. An all-weather road connects the mine to the community of Pickle Lake, about 200 km to the south.
- Musselwhite is a remote site with frequent exposure to extreme cold conditions.
- Majority of work is performed underground in a portal/ramp access mine setting. Access to the underground work area is via light vehicles on surface with exposure to outdoor weather
- Work place will vary in temperature and humidity will be dependent on location in the mine and ventilation configuration.
- Accommodation is in a camp environment near the workplace.
- 12hr rotating shifts consisting of days and nights in alternating 14 day cycles with 14 days off each 28 day cycle
- Operation of mechanized mining equipment, both enclosed and open cabs to perform regular mining tasks
- Position may require traveling to and/or assisting of other domestic and international sites.

Salary and Benefits
- The salary range offered for this role is CAD 200,000.00 to CAD 250,000.00. The salary range is tied to the Ontario market for jobs performed in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.
- This full-time role is eligible for participation in a discretionary short-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance, as well as a long-term incentive program and other applicable bonuses.
- This role is eligible to participate in group benefits plans such as life insurance and pension plan, extended medical, dental, disability, and vision.
- All bonuses and benefits are subject to the applicable eligibility and program/plan terms and may be modified or terminated at Newmont’s sole discretion.
