Senior Exploration Geologist

Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The Role

Reporting to the Geology Superintendent, The Senior Exploration Geologist role will generate exploration targets and make discoveries by systematically evaluating available datasets, executing agreed exploration programs to test them and confirm exploration models.  The incumbent will provide medium to long term direction (6 months - 3 years) for the testing of prioritised, early stage near-mine targets and their associated work programs on the mine controlled exploration leases of the Tanami Operations.

The role is based in Tanami and offers an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth, Brisbane, Darwin & Alice Springs ONLY.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Ensuring Exploration and Project Exploration Geologists as well as Core Shed Supervisors and Technicians are effectively mentored, trained and supervised to perform allocated duties.
  • Ensuring that time, focus and priorities of individual work is appropriate to ensure optimum team performance and in line with department objectives.
  • Assisting operations by ensuring the geology team has well developed basic geologic skills (mapping, logging, interpretation). 
  • Developing rank and rate system for all Near Mine exploration targets and assist with Regional targeting as required.
  • Preparing and present Near Mine budget, systematic long term assessment programs and business plans (3 year window).
  • Providing scope of work for new contracts (e.g., Surface Drilling).  Liaise with Contract Administrator in Perth to manage contract and agreements adhered to.

The Person

  • BSc (Hons) or MSc in Geological / Geosciences with extensive related field experience
  • Minimum 10 years industry experience within several different geologic environments; preferable to also have operational experience
  • Familiarity and experience of the Australian mining industry and associated exploration and mining regulations.
  • Strong analytical skills, with a focus on Continuous Improvement
