Senior Backfill Engineer

Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped 800 bed camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

About The Role

Reporting to the Strategic Planning Superintendent, the Senior Backfill Engineer will Manage and direct the Backfill team in the design, planning and implementation of all underground backfill activities required for safe, efficient and optimal ore recovery, maximizing  value for Newmont Tanami operations.

In This role you Will:
  • Collaborate closely with the Mining and Processing teams to manage all Backfill at Tanami Operations
  • Lead ancillary activities required to ensure that backfill can take place in the future as required
  • Achieve specific predetermined goals by formulating what needs to be done using the annual budget and quarterly forecasts.
  • Ensure procedures and practices are applied and identify opportunities to improve them
  • Evaluate and then propose optimum solutions (based on accumulated data/information) which threaten achievement of planned objectives
  • Constantly monitor and report on progress against plan and evaluate alternative means to utilise human, financial and technical resources to achieve objectives
  • Identify and apply best practice and drive continuous improvement
Your Skills, Training & Experience Checklist:
  • Tertiary Engineering (or equivalent) with a minimum of 10 years’ backfill experience
  • Experience in the use of underground mine design and planning software
  • Exposure to Mine Control Systems (preferably PitRAM and MineStar)
  • Experience in SAP is preferable but not essential
  • Sound analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of team or independently
  • Competent at decision making and implementation
  • Ability to step up and lead others when the situation demands
