Project Manager - MineStar for Underground

Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

About The Role:

The Project Manager – MineStar for Underground (M*forUG) is responsible for the day to day management, governance, and communications necessary for successful design, deployment, support and operations of theCaterpillar MineStar solution suite at Tanami. This entails managing a large scale technical program that will execute agreed deliverables on schedule and on budget utilizing standard project management methodologies and tools. This position will have direct supervision over contractors and site staff. The position is planned to last for 12 months, including a hand over to mine operations.

In This Role You Will:
  • Maintain and communicate a detailed Project Execution Plan for M*forUG .
  • Maintain, manage and coordinate with Supply Chain and Legal departments, the execution of three key agreements supporting the project with Caterpillar. These agreements include the License Agreement, the Rental Agreement and the Support Agreement.
  • Manage and coordinate a cross-organizational project team to design, deploy and support four key components of the MineStar underground solution at Tanami:
    • IT infrastructure, including servers
    • The MineStar underground data network, including Access Points, fibre and cabinets, on all active production levels, in the declines and in other selected areas of the mine
    • MineStar AssetDetect. This is a Proximity Detection System to improve the safety of personnel and equipment operating underground. It will be deployed on approximately 110 vehicles and used by all personnel underground
    • MineStar Fleet. This is fleet and task management system to improve efficiency, productivity and lower cost in the mining operation. The focus of this deployment is on LHDs and haul trucks.
  • Liase and communicate with any existing contractors whose services are impacted, or even removed, due to the deployment of MineStar.
  • Follow the appropriate change management process to gain site buy-in, approval and sustainable ownership of the improvements MineStar offers.
  • Actively manage Caterpillar and Epiroc in the design and delivery of the agreed Collison Avoidance Solution.
  • Liase and communicate with Mining Regulators as required by the General Manager to inform them with respect to MineStar safety systems for proximity Detection and/or Collision Avoidance.
  • Directly manage four communications technicians currently employed at Tanami and one Change Management lead.
  • Onboard and directly manage two technicians and two application engineers provided by Caterpillar to support and leverage the MineStar solution.
Your Skills, Training & Experience Checklist:
  • Degree or Diploma and extensive technical experience in IT infrastructure, data networks, mining safety systems and fleet and task management
  • Strong understanding of data, reporting and short interval control in mining
  • Ten plus years’ experience in mining or mining support roles, including site based roles
  • Technical fluency; comfort understanding and discussing technology concepts and experience understanding technical impacts on scope
  • Best practice project management methodologies and techniques, and industry standard project management certification e.g. PMP.
Working Conditions

This role is based in Tanami, with periods of time being required in Perth office. Some domestic and international travel may be required.
