Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.


The Mine Geology Superintendent is responsible for oversight of the short to long term (1 month – 5 years) ore control function to maximise the profitable extraction of reserves. The incumbent leads a team of Geologists that is responsible for underground diamond drilling, production reporting and reconciliation and grade estimation modelling activities. 


  • Provide the Mine Geology Section with clear strategy, expectations and objectives.

  • Manage critical relationships between the Mine Geology Section and key internal and external stakeholders, including underground drilling Business Partner Supervisors, Scheduling Engineers, Mining Shift Bosses, Exploration Geologists and Processing Department team members.

  • Oversee all geologic systems that support the collection of reliable drilling data, the construction of grade estimation models and the monitoring and reconciliation of ore production in order to meet the agreed site Business Plan.

  • Design and implement or support the design and implementation of systems improvement programs with guidance and support from Technical Specialists.

  • Monitor and report on the performance of mining practices via the reconciliation of mining physicals against models and processing outputs.

  • Oversee the development of grade estimation models for Newmont Tanami Operations in conjunction with the Australia Region Resource Modelling Team.

  • Ensure analytical data integrity with QAQC analysis, monitoring and action implementation. 

Essential Duties

  • BSc (Hons) or MSc in Geological / Geosciences with extensive related field experience

  • Industry experience within several different geologic environments; preferably including open pit and underground mining operations

  • Familiarity and experience of the Australian mining industry and associated exploration and mining regulations

  • Strong analytical skills, with a focus on Continuous Improvement

  • Dynamic, self-motivated, a determination to excel, and a commitment to action

  • Strong Leadership, sound management skills and demonstrable frontline management

  • Financial management and budgeting skills

  • Exposure to strategic business planning processes

  • A demonstrated ability work in a team and to supervise geological personnel, drilling contractors, 

  • Modelling Software proficiency (GIS packages, ArcView, Leapfrog and Vulcan)

Working Conditions

The role is based in Tanami and offers a FIFO roster from Perth, Brisbane, Darwin and Alice Springs.
