Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The role

Reporting to the Senior Medium Term Planning Engineer, you will be responsible for the active input into the site MTP function and delivery of medium term mine planning work packages focusing on the 3-to-24-month time horizon. 

In the role, you will

  • Provide the optimization of lateral and vertical development designs to ensure a workable and safe Mine Plan.
  • Produce 2-year mine plan to align with Strategic Long Term planning guidance.
  • Generate Quarterly Forecast planning, financial analysis, and input into XERAS cost model database.
  • Provide technical and scheduling guidance to the Scheduling and STP Engineers to produce a workable and safe Mine Plan.
  • Create workable and safe development designs to ensure that the Strategic Long-Term objective is met.
  • Stakeholder engagement across the site, including short term and long term mine planning and other cross functional teams.

The person

  • Degree:  B. Eng /B.Sc. Mining Engineering or equivalent is essential
  • Experience in a range of mine planning horizons including exposure to long term mine planning, production support, mine operations and design in large and diversified mine sites, with preference for experience in conventional hard rock Gold / Copper-Gold operations.
  • Ability to build and maintain a strong communications network with planning peers, Technical Services Managers, Project/Study Directors, Mine Managers, and JV partner representatives.
  • Experience in operations with complex multi mine, multi process situations preferable and a knowledge of mine methods, mine design, production scheduling (strategic and tactical), equipment selection, reserve estimation and economic evaluations.

Training & experience

  • High level of competence in the use of mine planning software, including optimization techniques and experience with mine design and scheduling packages from DESWIK. (CAD, IS and MDM)
  • Knowledge of unit costing methods and experienced in financial analysis and financial models. Experience with Xeras cost estimating tool a plus.
  • Knowledge of exploration methods and resource estimation
  • Strong problem solving and 3D visualization skills.

Working conditions

The position is located at the Tanami mine site, however infrequent travel to the regional offices may be required.
