Newmont Tanami is on Aboriginal freehold land 540km northwest of Alice Springs. It is a long-life, low-cost, world-class asset in a core Newmont region. The Tanami Expansion 2 project, aims to extend the mine life beyond 2040, investing in a hoisting shaft which will increase the production of the underground mine from 2.6 Mtpa to 3.2 Mtpa.  Both the successful exploration within the underground operation and implementation of the first Tanami Expansion has laid the foundation to further develop the operation to remain a major contributor to the Newmont portfolio. A fully equipped camp is located 40km from the site offering modern leisure facilities for those flying in from Perth, Brisbane, Alice Springs or Darwin.

The Role

Based at the Tanami Expansion Project, this role will report to the Project Health and Safety Manager and will be a key member of the Project Health and Safety team. This role will support the development and implementation of Newmont Health and Safety Strategic Initiatives and associated programs across the project, working closely with the EPCM and multiple contractors on site through all project phases.

This is a fixed term contract until December 2023, on an 8 days on, 6 days off roster FIFO from Perth, Darwin, Alice Springs or Brisbane.

Key Tasks

  • Participate in and support risk assessment workshops, the development and review of safe work method statements, and Job Hazard Analysis
  • Review and ensure site compliance with Newmont FRM Standards and relevant legislative requirements
  • Safety data reporting and analysis, effectively identifying and sharing trends and issues
  • Provide engagement and support for project site leaders
  • Develop strong working relationships with site contractors and H&S teams
  • Interface with Operations, Project, EPCM and contractors
  • Provide visible and vocal safety leadership across the site
  • Providing event classification guidance and act as incident investigation lead
  • Direct involvement and support of the Newmont assurance standards
  • Maintain direct contact with Newmont peers to ensure alignment and standardisation

About You

  • Tertiary qualified  in health, safety, or human resources (desirable)
  • Proven experience in a site-based Health and Safety role in construction, heavy industrial and / or mining environment
  • Collaborative H&S Team member who can build relationships and work in a fast paced environment
  • Analytical capability and data-based decision making
  • Advanced interpersonal, communication and influencing skills

  • Experience in contractor management
  • Conduct audit, inspections and assurance activities
  • Lead and conduct Investigations
  • Understanding and application of NT WHS legislation
