The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

About this role

What will you be responsible for?
The Mine Operations Advisor coaches the mine operations and mine services front-line supervisors (General Foremen, Supervisors), crews and contractors to improve operational efficiency and safety of the mining operations.

In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

Health & Safety

  • We perform daily workplace inspections with the Mine supervisors to identify hazards and assign actions for resolution of identified hazards
  • We complete safety training and certification, as the need arises onsite 
  • We provide leadership in Risk Identification processes and support in the development of STP’s/SOP’s/JHA’s
  • We coach the operations team to implement all tasks in a safe way, identifying safety concerns and suggesting procedural and technical improvements. We also contribute to safety interactions.
  • We mentor Mine Supervisors in making quality safety interactions and observations 

Operational Excellence & Growth

  • We support implementation of operational excellence initiatives, including Full Potential projects, leading the implementation of procedural, behavioral, and technological changes.
  • We identify performance and efficiency gaps and recommend standard methodologies that can be adopted to improve performance in the areas of drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, road construction and maintenance, and water management.
  • We mentor front-line supervisors to optimally lead their crews and to align with Newmont Standards.
  • We perform on-the-job training with operators to improve productivity and safety performance.

  • We follow procedures related to environmental sustainability
  • We report environmental incidents and support investigations
  • We collaborate with business partners in the best interest of the company

Your training, skills and experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!


  • Secondary School education
  • Basic Computer skills (MS Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)


  • Minimum 10 years’ experience operating in large open pit gold mines, of which at least 3 years in supervisory capacity. Experience in Newmont operations and exposure to Newmont’s global systems and processes is a strong pre;
  • Experience working with Caterpillar trucks, dozers, graders (785D, D10, 16M/18M) and Hitachi shovels (EX3600);
  • Experience working in various ground conditions (saprolite, hard rock) and in seasonal rainfall patterns with large rain events;

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Proven affinity with and success in implementing performance improvement projects;
  • Strong coaching capabilities. Intercultural experience and experience working in developing countries would be a pre.

Where you will be located!

Newmont Suriname, LLC, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Newmont Mining Corporation and operates the Merian Gold Project, a 50-million tons per year gold mining operation. The Merian Gold Project is located in the tropical rainforest in the north-east of Suriname, South America, approximately 100 km southeast of Paramaribo the capital city of Suriname. Production began in October 2016.
The incumbent for this position is required to work a 6 week on - 3 week off roster and is expected to spend most of her/his time in the field, with some office work. The incumbent must to be prepared to work safely in a difficult working environment due to varying weather conditions including high temperatures and elevated humidity. Accommodation on site will be in a camp environment.
