Newmont Exploration in the region is based in Perth, but operates across Australia. The group is responsible for growing Newmont’s current operations in WA and NT and discovering new deposits across the region. The team has access to in house global technical specialists in applying the latest exploration technology in its quest for discovery. 


The role: 

This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Exploration Geologist with the Newmont regional exploration team based from our office in Welshpool. This role is part of the small team led by the Senior Regional Exploration Geologist who works on regional targets on Newmont’s large land holding in the Tanami District.  The team leverage the infrastructure of the Tanami Operations while exploring further afield in this prospective district.  There is around 6 – 8 months field based work on a nominal 8:6 roster when in the field.  At times these may be longer to suit operational requirements.
In this role you will:


  • Take personal responsibility for ensuring the exploration projects are conducted in a safe manner using and maintaining Newmont tools such as standard work procedures, hazard analyses, routine inspections and behavioural observations.
  • Ensure land access, field logistics, and contract field assistants, geophysical and drilling crews operate in accordance with Newmont exploration standard operating procedures.
  • Have full participation in the collection and interrogation of results from geological mapping, drill core or chip logging, and surface geochemical sampling programs.
  • Ensure that reporting required meets Newmont Australian standards and is completed and distributed on time.
  • Effectively communicate results and recommendations to management.
  • Ensure all operations are conducted in an environmentally sensitive manner with due regard to local community concerns.
  • Promote and adhere to Newmont internal methodologies, policies, procedures and standards by consistently maintaining a high quality of work across all allocated functions.
  • Provide input/informed commentary, improvement opportunities and areas of risk to management.
  • Obtain the appropriate approvals before entering onto privately owned land, pastoral land, land held under Aboriginal Reserve or Native Title, and land held for conservation reasons. Ensure that close liaison is maintained with the appropriate people and government authorities and record these communications.
  • Be accountable for expenditure within the delegated limits of authority.

You will have:


  •  B Sc Geology with Honours is preferred.
  • At least two years post graduate experience in gold exploration.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • The ability to develop leadership and sound personnel management skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • The interpersonal skills required to supervise drilling contractors.
  • Modelling Software proficiency (preferably Vulcan).
  •  Administration and Microsoft Office Skills.
