About this role

The Process Maintenance General Foreman has responsibility for all mechanical maintenance aspects of the Merian Process Department’s areas of responsibility. This includes but is not limited to, team development, mechanical equipment selection, maintenance, repairs and reporting. Responsibilities include supporting the Process Maintenance Superintendent and the overall achievement of processing plant objectives by insuring maximum availability of the plant while meeting all health, safety and environmental requirements.

In this role you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We supervise expatriate and national process maintenance supervisors, trainers, traders and contractors.
  • We provide technical support, mentorship and tasking includes, but is not limited to, the processing plant, the primary crusher, the detoxification plant, the effluent treatment plant and tailings and reclaim water systems.
  • We coordinate with maintenance planners to ensure the implementation and use of effective maintenance planning
  • We supervise key performance indicators for the department with the strive to achieve budgeted equipment availability and cost efficiency.
  • We stay ahead of new technologies and be proactive in introducing new equipment, concepts and procedures that support perpetual optimization of the operation.
  • We understand the budget and run costs.
  • We ensure that Safety and Environment activities are integral parts of production standards.
  • We conduct staff and safety meetings. Mentor national staff and ensure line-of-progression is settled and acted upon.
  • We ensure that maintenance department personnel are adequately trained and equipped to perform all work you're leading.
  • We interact with and support other processing department groups to ensure optimal plant efficiency. 
  • We attend meetings with Maintenance and Operations representatives. Seek out feedback and make adjustments to the Maintenance plan if required.
  • We read, comprehend and interpret equipment and system literature and technical data, Material Safety Data Sheets, product labeling, warning signs, instructional manuals, and system condition reports in support of prevention of injury to personnel and the loss of property or production.
  • We assist with hiring, reviews, training, disciplinary, and other personnel actions
  • We lead by example in all aspects of Newmont’s visions, values, and social responsibility.
  • We ensure department’s compliance with the requirement of Government of Suriname’s Agencies, Newmont lending institutions, shareholders’ environmental, health and Safety legislation and company regulations.
  • We are a visible safety leader.

Your Training, Skills and Experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!



  • Possess, at the minimum, a mechanical trade certification from a recognized training institution and/or a technical diploma or degree in mechanical/maintenance engineering or related field 
  • Have validated leadership capabilities.
  • Preferably have experience with preparation, commissioning and startup of a new gold processing facility.
  • Preferably have cross cultural work experience in a remote operation and/or a developing country.
  • Have significant training, mentor and overall supervision experience, especially with an initial relatively inexperienced workforce.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work with others in a multi-department, multi-skills organization; good computer skills.
  • Experience with manual and computerized maintenance planning systems. SAP experience will be highly regarded.
  • Knowledge of relevant standard operating procedures, especially in maintenance.
  • PC skills using office software such as MS Project, Excel, Word and Power Point.
  • Interpersonal relationship skills and problem solving skills are required.
  • Demonstrate skills in leadership and communication in English (Dutch Language skills would be an advantage) 


  • Strong technical knowledge and at least 10 years of advanced leadership experience in large scale open pit mining and milling operations and a minimum of 15 years of overall experience in a maintenance related field.
  • Be a visible safety leader with a commitment to the Newmont Merian Safety procedures.
  • Previous Cintellate and SAP experience would be advantageous 
  • Experience in acting Superintendent role or higher

Skills and Abilities: 


  • Validated safe working record.
  • Ability to understand piping and instrument drawings. 
  • Ability to understand and interpret technical drawings.
  • Ability to understand KPI's targets that the mechanical department is expected to achieve.
  • Show strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Strong PC skills using MS office software Ability to ensure that the Newmont vision is communicated and supported
  • Experience in development of teams and individuals.
  • Excellent leadership & management skills
  • Proficient computer skills and maintenance system experience (SAP)
  • Ability to lead safety management system requirements and compliance.
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with internal & external clients
  • Ability to handle operational plans and work place information systems.
  • Experience and leadership in asset management.
  • Experience in development and maintaining of budgets.
  • Experience in oversite operational & CAPEX projects.
  • Be able to promote continuous improvement.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of standards and compliance requirements 

Working Conditions and Location

Where you will be located!

  • The position is located at the Merian Mine site 
  • The Maintenance General Foreman works in an office as well as in a process plant environment.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment including safety footwear, long sleeved shirts, long trousers, safety glasses, hard hat and any other equipment to perform duties safely as required by the Health and Safety Plan.
  • Must be capable of and willing to work in a tropical climate zone.
  • Work on a schedule of 42 days on followed by 21 days off. With nominal 12 hour days 
  • Must pass the company medical examination.
  • Works outside in all weather conditions.
  • Regular exposure to moderate amounts of noise in the physical plant, dust and dirt at most work sites, and occasionally works at heights in excess of 10 feet within the physical plant.
