About this role

What will you be responsible for?
The Sustainability and External Relations Manager Lead will contribute to the development and improvement of the site environment and community management systems and performance. They will provide environment and community leadership for Peñasquito and related projects and assets, ensuring that regulatory, industry-leading practice, and internal corporate requirements are achieved. Developing strong working relationships with other areas of Peñasquito, at the corporate, region, this person will assist in the determination, implementation, and assurance of Peñasquito strategic ESG objectives.
The S&ER Manager will demonstrate strong leadership capacity and will be highly visible on-site, promoting an environment and community-focused workplace by supporting the implementation of policies and strategies, as well as through the coaching and mentoring of departmental and asset senior management.

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We ensure the business has systems in place to effectively monitor compliance with the relevant legal, social, environmental, regional, and corporate requirements
  • We ensure that the site leads environmental and social risks adequately and timely
  • We own the processes related with the environmental regulators and work closely with the Legal Department in executing the strategy of legacy issues
  • We analyze and report to management environmental trends
  • We advise, support, and assist the senior management in the implementation of Newmont ESG policies and protocols
  • We demonstrate a highly visible on-site presence and commitment to the implementation of strategy, policies, procedures systems, processes, and interactions
  • We foster a proactive approach to the management of environment and community with the operational areas to encourage leveraging of standard methodologies across the business
  • We develop and coordinate the S&ER team at the site
  • We assist generally with providing oversight of departmental environment and community-related matters
  • We represent the company in potential negotiations process with different partners
  • We secure compliance with environmental permits, social agreements, land access contracts among others.
  • We coordinate with other areas to build and maintain a high internal and external reputation
  • Lead S&ER team talent review and adequate succession planning


  • We drive a high-performance culture, role modeling, and reinforcing the behaviors that will underpin the success of the business at all levels
  • We actively support assets in talent management to build the depth of vital skills for current and future people requirements across the environment and community areas
  • We run and/or supervise the progress of department-led or driven environment and community projects and support assets, where needed, in the same areas
  • We ensure timely and accurate delivery of any required information for internal and external reporting, including the Annual Report, Annual Sustainability Report, UN Global Compact (UNGC); COP, CDP Water, ICMM-required reporting, or others required
  • We coach and mentor team members and site leadership in: environment and community risk and impact assessments, environment and community management systems, change management, incident reporting and investigation, auditing (assurance and certification), technical (water, air, land, carbon, biodiversity, etc.), human rights leadership, social performance initiatives and partnership opportunities, community investment opportunities and performance, driving operational results through Sustainable development, climate change, and S&ER Function Risk Management


  • We lead the S&ER Department in the implementation of relevant environment and community requirements of the ESG and strategic objectives, including the establishment of KPIs
  • We lead the environmental permitting strategy
  • We work closely with the Legal Department and support the development and execution of the legacy environmental issues and legacy social commitments strategy
  • We actively contribute to and lead department-level requirements of the environment and community projects and initiatives driven by the site, region, or Corporate office
  • We develop and supervise the annual S&ER budget, monitor performance against budget, and provide corrections as required

Your training, skills, & experience checklist

Here is what we would need to see from you!

  • Degree qualified in a subject area related to Environment, Social Performance, Climate Change and/or Community
  • Masters’ Degree viewed positively


  • Minimum of ten to 10 years experience in the extractives or heavy industry sectors
  • Extensive experience with international standards (e.g., ISO14001, UN Principles, IFC, UN Sustainable Development Goals, GRI Standards) and Mexican environmental regulations
  • Proven experience leading environmental permitting processes, of new and existing facilities
  • Valid experience leading environmental authorities’ inspections and other regulatory processes
  • Validated experience understanding water quality and quantity monitoring processes and trend analysis
  • Validated technical experience in areas such as water, biodiversity, energy, air emissions, land management, social performance, conflict management, etc.
  • Proven experience in the areas of Human Rights, Community and Partner Relations, Community Investments, and Partnerships
  • Experience and understanding of partner engagement strategies to identify, address and mitigate environmental impacts in the community
  • Strong experience in community & government dialogue and negotiating processes
  • Strong operational knowledge and experience
  • Sound analytical, report and writing skills
  • Experience planning and implementing assurance activities
  • Strong communication, presentation, and relationship-building skills
  • Knowledge of Mexico viewed positively
  • English and Spanish languages skills
