The Environmental sub function supports environmental governance at Newmont through the implementation of policy, strategies, standards and subject matter expertise. This includes water, energy & climate, biodiversity, waste and hazardous materials management, and permitting.   

Essential Duties


The intern will be responsible for supporting ongoing projects during the course of his or her internship, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of the department. The exact projects will be determined according to the intern’s availability, interest, skills, and experience. This intern would specifically support the Environmental sub function of the Sustainability and External Relations (S&ER) group. 


Possible projects include:

  • Research into multiple topics including water, energy and climate change, biodiversity, waste management, and product stewardship
  • Supporting benchmarking and setting metrics to improve ESG performance
  • General support to the Environmental Team for data analyses and reporting
  • Support development of frameworks for supporting external certification
  • Support of implementation of the biodiversity indicators work
  • Support regions and sites on specific issues related to environment
  • Collect and organize water, tailings and energy & climate data in support of  CDP water and climate questionnaires
  • Support for external disclosures
  • Develop guidance documents and auditing protocol
  • Participate on and provide support to the Closure and Reclamation Working Group, Global Water Strategy Team, Global Energy and Climate Team
  • Support development white papers and technical documents and WebEx to support internal communication and education


The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work; other work may also be assigned.

Training & Experience


  • Graduate students preferred, graduating in December 2020 or later – MBA with STEM undergraduate degree, Environmental Engineering, Mine Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering and degrees related to Water Resources and Geology. Other similar disciplines will be considered.
  • Women and students with experiences of different and diverse cultures are strongly encouraged to apply
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the mining industry
  • Organized and good project management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills & comfort engaging senior leaders and global teams
  • Strong research methods capability and writing skills
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for the Environment and Sustainability (for example: through coursework, personal travel, upbringing, extracurricular activities, past work experience, volunteer work)
Working Conditions


  • This is a full-time (40 hours per week), paid internship that will run from approximately May 11, 2020 thru August 14, 2020 depending on the selected student's school schedule.
  • This role will be located at our Corporate Headquarters located in Greenwood Village, CO.
