Strategic Development evaluates merger and acquisition opportunities, assists with contract and property management, and manages Newmont's portfolio of marketable securities. Our team coordinates with the regions and the discovery and development teams to evaluate prospective opportunities. We leverage our corporate and global resources and apply market analytics to guide us in assessing each opportunity. This process ensures Newmont invests in the best projects to provide the greatest return on investment so our business remains sustainable, profitable and responsible well into the future.

Essential Duties


Scope and Responsibilities

The internship will ideally be from May 2019 – December 2019. The exact dates are flexible depending on the student’s availability. It is assumed that the internship will be full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer and part-time (~20 hours/week) during the school year as the student’s schedule permits. Interns will receive a stipend.  


The work will be designed to execute with little supervision at the Denver Tech Center corporate office, and may include travel to one or more of Newmont’s sites.  There is ample opportunity for internal networking around the company.


The intern will be responsible for implementing specific Strategic Development projects during the course of his or her internship, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of the department. The exact projects will be determined according to the intern’s availability, interest, skills, and experience.


Possible projects include:

  • Support ongoing transaction work related to Mergers and Acquisitions
  • Help maintain competitor model database and benchmarking
  • Research potential acquisition target
  • Build financial models of potential acquisitions
  • Aid team in developing presentations for internal and external audiences

Training & Experience



  • Graduate students preferred, graduating in December 2019 or later – pursuing Masters in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Data Science, Mathematics; other disciplines will be considered.
  • At least a 3.3 GPA or equivalent
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the mining industry
  • Strong Excel skills and financial modeling experience required
  • Basic understanding of financial accounting, familiarity with annual and quarterly financial statements
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Organized and efficient time manager and ability to work unsupervised
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, and comfort with speaking to global internal stakeholders
  • Excellent PowerPoint and writing skills
