About this role

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:
This person will provide thought leadership to Newmont exploration teams at site and in brownfields/greenfields settings in the collection, interpretation and utilization of structural geological data. This incumbent will also employ structural geological understanding to the interpretation of mineralizing systems at deposit to regional scale. Additionally, the role will collaborate with other technical professionals in 2D and 3D studies to target mineral deposits and resolve their location, geometry and continuity. This person will identify, mentor, develop, and train structural geologists in site and regional teams, and continually improve structural geology skills & succession plans. In addition, the person in this role will apply geological expertise to the development and deployment of the EBD domain framework and prospective ranking. The incumbent will conduct peer reviews, develop standards, provide QA/QC of structural data, and validate geology model products in support of exploration, operations and projects.

  • We employ sophisticated techniques in the collection, interpretation and use of structural geological data to improve targeting, accelerate discovery and optimize property acquisitions
  • We review structural geological data and interpretations to ensure consistency and appropriate uses in downstream applications, including inputs for 3D geological and prospective models.
  • We work with subject matter authorities and geoscientists in identification and ranking of potential domains
  • We develop the content, syndicate and improve standards, guidelines, workflows related to structural geology. 
  • We provide technical training and support the talent strategy, to ensure the availability of skilled structural geologists to support the Exploration function across Newmont’s portfolio.

Training and Experience:

  • University degree in Geology or related field, 15+ years of proven experience in mining, mineral or petroleum exploration environments, specializing in structural geology. 
  • Advanced degree and/or proven skills in structural geology applied to mineral systems or petroleum systems across scales from regional- to deposit-scale.
  • Exposure to a variety of geological environments with expertise in the analysis of structural architecture & geodynamic setting
  • Ability to interpret geophysical datasets (e.g., aeromagnetic, gravity gradient, seismic) and integrate structural studies with geochemical data (e.g., alteration patterns, spectral data)
  • Good knowledge of the resource development process from grassroots exploration to reserve definition and production.
  • Strong understanding of resource and reserve disclosure standards
  • Professional accreditation is preferred.
  • Teammate with experience in leadership of technical staff and understanding and presenting management expectations.
  • Entrepreneurial problem solver, with knowledge of groundbreaking geological concepts, ideas, and approaches to exploration.
  • Familiarity with the Mineral Systems framework for exploration targeting.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Transparent leadership in safety, health, sustainability and external relations (S&ER).
  • Experience in working with and supporting exploration activities in a variety of cultural environments, with skills in partner engagement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to produce clear written documents and accurate geologic presentations for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Cross functional collaboration with specialists in other geoscience functions (e.g., data science, geochemistry, geophysics, processing) and other business functions (e.g., finance, S&ER).
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements from the business and partners.
  • Second language skills (French, Spanish, Dutch) preferred.

Working conditions & location

Where you will be located!

  • The position is primarily located in the Denver office. 
  • Position is required to travel to other domestic and international sites. 
  • Part of the work may be done in Greenfield exploration environments where conditions may be primitive and/or harsh at times. (Primitive/Harsh = surface or underground environments, hot to extreme cold, desert or tropical rain forest to tundra conditions, remote field camps, high mountain terrain, steep rough terrain, long distance and/or time to advanced medical care).
  • Extended periods away from the home base may be required.
  • This role requires to hold/operate a phone and radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation.
  • The position requires to drive a manual transmission vehicle, 4x4 vehicle and occasionally operate an all-terrain vehicle.

The salary range offered for this role is $111,000 to 145,635. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.  The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.   

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance.
