About this role

What you will be responsible for?

Guide the Global Geoscience Group Geo-modeling pool of Subject Matter Experts in the areas of 3D modeling, prospectivity modeling and structural geology. Constantly evaluate and optimize team’s performance, capacity and technical capability.

Provide leadership to Newmont exploration teams at site and in Brownfields/Greenfields settings, building geological models to improve target selection and overall probability of success.

Employ structural geological understanding to the interpretation of mineralizing systems at deposit to regional scale.

Collaborate with other technical experts in 2D and 3D prospectivity studies to target mineral deposits and resolve their characteristics and economic viability.

Identify, mentor, develop, train and continually improve geologic modeling skills & succession plans and contribute mentorship for geology functions.

Conduct peer reviews, develop standards, provide QA/QC and validation of geology model products in support of exploration, operations and projects. 

Your role will consist of

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

•    Partner with the Chief Geoscientist in the deployment of the geo-modeling team of structural geologists and geo-modeling experts.
•    We employ advanced geologic modeling techniques to exploration programs and EBD evaluations to improve process, likelihood of discovery and acquisition success.
•    We review geologic data acquisition, interpretation and modeling products to ensure internal consistency and appropriate uses in downstream applications, including inputs for 2D and 3D prospectivity models.
•    We implement and provide feedback on the deployment of innovative geologic modeling methods and tools, including platforms for collaborative and automated model construction and validation.
•    Develop the content, syndicate and improve geologic modeling standards, guidelines and workflows. 
•    We provide technical training and support the talent strategy, and ensure the availability of skilled technical staff to support geologic modeling requirements across Newmont’s portfolio.

Education:

University degree in Geology or related field, strong understanding of resource and reserve disclosure standards; professional accreditation will be considered an asset.

Experience:

•    12+ years of advanced training and experience in geological modeling
•    Broad industry experience in mining or mineral exploration environments 
•    Good knowledge of the resource development process from grassroots exploration to reserve definition and production.
•    Strong skills in structural geology applied to mineral deposits at various scales.
•    Broad and multi-disciplinary experience in a variety of geological environments with particular exposure to gold and base metals.
•    Familiarity and track record of use of industry standard geology and resource modeling software.

Skills and Abilities:

•    Transparent leadership in safety, health, sustainability and external relations (S&ER).
•    Experience in working with and supporting exploration activities in a variety of cultural environments, with practical skills in collaborator engagement.
•    Ability to build, synthesize, and manipulate large geologic datasets from proprietary, third party and government sources and identify high probability subsets for new resource targeting. 
•    Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to produce clear written documents and accurate geologic presentations for technical and non-technical audiences.
•    Cross-functional collaboration with specialists in other geoscience functions (e.g. data science, geochemistry, geophysics, processing) and other business functions (e.g. finance, S&ER).
•    Flexibility to adapt to changing requirements from the business and stakeholders.
•    Team player, with identified experience in guiding a team of technical staff, and understanding and presenting management expectations.
•    Innovative thinker, with knowledge of groundbreaking new geological concepts, ideas, and mineralization models.
•    Second language skills (French, Spanish, Dutch) will be considered an asset. 

Working conditions and location

•    The position is primarily located in the Denver office. 
•    Position is required to travel to, and assist other domestic and international sites. 
•    Part of the work may be done in Greenfield exploration environments where conditions may be primitive and/or harsh at times. (Primitive/Harsh = surface or underground environments, hot to extreme cold, desert or tropical rain forest to tundra conditions, remote field camps, high mountain terrain, steep rough terrain, long distance and/or time to advanced medical care).
•    Extended periods away from the home base may be required.
•    Must be able to hold/operate a phone and radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation.
•    Able to drive a vehicle. 

The salary range offered for this role is $130,320 - 171,045 . The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.  The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.  

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
