What will you be responsible for?

The Senior Director of External Relations will be tasked with building and improving Newmont’s long term reputation in Argentina. In addition, the Director of External Relations will manage all Government Relations, Community Relations and Communications (Internal and External) and collaborate closely appropriately with other functions. The Director of External Relations will work with Newmont employees and key contractors to ensure adequate consideration of socio-political criteria in decision-making, and lead direct engagement with national and international government authorities, NGOs, industry associations, and international organizations. A key for the role will be success in promoting continuous improvement, and to provide guidance and mentoring to all External Relations staff.


Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We development and supervise implementation of partner relations management strategy
  • We build and manage Argentina’s government relations strategy
  • We development and execute Argentina’s community investment strategy which supports locals hiring & procurement projects.
  • Effectively engage with industry organizations to support the industry initiatives, identified possible risks and improve reputation of the mining industry in Argentina.
  • Responsible for implementation and compliance of Newmont standards associated to the External Relations function.
  • Proactively identify and manage national and international socio-political risks to the business
  • Identify and manage Human Rights risk associated to our activities in Argentina
  • Support in crisis management.
  • Serve as company speaker when and if required.
  • Supervise and manage a complaint and grievance system and measure fulfillment of local commitments
  • Develop and coordinate engagement plans for national, international NGOs and industry associations,
  • Development and implementation Argentina’s External communication strategy
  • Develop and maintain proficient and constructive relationships with media and relevant opinion leaders
  • Protect and improve Newmont Argentina and Cerro Negro reputation
  • We develop and implement Argentina’s internal communication strategy to maintain employees and business partners advised, engaged and motivated to - achieve business objectives
  • We provide messaging and materials support to key partners both external and internal
  • We are a Safety Leader and provide Transparent Felt Safety Leadership

Here is what we would need to see from you!

  • University degree in relevant field and minimum of 10-15 years of experience in Government Affairs, External Affairs, Community Relations, and/or Communications, including experience in mining project development, and experience in Argentina. Technical and legal acuity is well considered.
  • Experience in the extractive industry in developing countries is a must.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in managing teams
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills in both English and Spanish required
  • Experience in crafting and implementing balanced development projects
  • Specific training and experience in conflict resolution and dialogue, including design and implementation of partner engagement plans
  • Strong project management skills, including in scheduling and budgets with demonstrated ability to achieve deadlines and manage priorities
  • Strong understanding of the different functions within a mining organization, and how to collaborate with them
  • Broad business knowledge and focus, with the ability to recognize issues, problems and capitalize on opportunities
  • Ability to mentor, coach and direct multicultural teams of varying experience and education levels

Where you will be located!

  • Will require domestic and international travel.
