Purpose:

The Manager, Environment, is a department head position and member of the Cerro Negro Site Leadership Team.  The incumbent is responsible for development and implementation of the environmental management system (including monitoring, compliance, permitting and reclamation activities) and accountable for the implementation of the water and closure Steering Committee objectives. The role ensures that legal and other obligations relating to environmental management and performance are adhered to and is accountable for reporting and engaging on such matters to internal and external stakeholders including senior business executives, regulatory authorities, and NGO’s.

Essential Duties: 

  1. Lead the development and implementation of the environmental department annual budget, strategy, objectives and targets to improve environmental performance and continually reduce business risk.
  2. Develop, update and implement protocols, procedures and requirements for environmental management at the site; including Management Plans, Risk Assessments, Continuous Improvement Plans, and Environmental Design Criteria.
  3. Approve and submit reports, plans, permits and documents to senior leadership and regulatory authorities. Including the development of the bi-annual Environmental Impact Assessment report.
  4. Input to and implement company strategies related to Climate, Water, Closure, and Biodiversity.
  5. Assess environmental technical aspects related to site activities, maintain site risk register and track adherence to environmental legal requirements, external obligations and company standards.
  6. Review and analyze environmental information related to technical design for regulatory agencies and the Newmont Investment System.
  7. Lead implementation of sustainable environmental innovative programs that support the sectors effort and commitment towards responsible mining.
  8. Develop and implement an audits and inspections schedule in accordance with the Environmental Management Plan and procedures. Follow up and coordinate corrective actions implementation and conduct field verification as appropriate.
  9. Develop and implement environmental monitoring sampling programs and supervise consultant and contractor personnel.
  10. Review and approve annual updates to site closure and reclamation cost estimates annually for life of mine. Oversee implementation of concurrent reclamation plans to reduce closure liability.
  11. Collaborate with other Department Managers to successfully implement environmental programs and initiatives, while also anticipating environmental challenges and defining strategies and execution plans on how to address those challenges.
  12. Facilitate the development of department employees, including coaching and mentoring staff, to ensure competency and ability to advance.
  13. Lead event investigations and maintain the Environmental event database, for tracking all environmental events on site and implementing corrective and preventative actions.
  14. Lead, train and advise all site employees on Environmental Management Plans to ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and standards.

Work Conditions:

  • Live in a remote mining accommodation camp for extended periods as per the work schedule.
  • Work under all weather conditions, and for extended periods outdoors.
  • Walk on the rough uneven, inclined, wet terrain and climb stairs.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including hardhat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, earplugs, gloves, or any other equipment to perform duties safely as required by the Health & Safety Plan.

Experience & Training:

  • University degree in environmental science / engineering or related field (i.e. natural resource management, biology, hydrology, etc).
  • Extensive knowledge of mining and processing operations and associated environmental risks and management systems.
  • Knowledge of environmental laws and regulations as well as international best-practice relevant to mining operations and environmental management.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience
  • At least four years’ experience in a managerial or similar role.
  • Proven record of managing environmental activities and risks, preferably in a mining or industrial operation. 
  • Experience with climate and energy policies, water strategies, and permitting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Fluency in Spanish language. English skills will be very highly regarded.
  • Strong organizational, project management, interpersonal and influencing skills.
  • Values-based leader with ability to work closely with senior internal/external stakeholders, to lead and coordinate effectively across organizational lines.
  • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, database management. Experience with ArcGIS is desirable.
