Main Responsibilities

Leads and manages the development and implementation of health, safety management systems and processes that incorporate risk management strategies to  drive continuous improvement in relation to site Health and Safety.
Manage the execution of occupational H&S plan to reduce and minimize the impact of work on employees’ health and well-being and to protect the company personnel, assets, processes and product. Continuously improve the Emergency Rescue Team’s capacity and coverage. Develop, monitor and direct the implementation of H&S policies and procedures, across all operational levels within Newmont. Oversee all H&S activities to ensure compliance with local and international legislation, regulations and operational best practices. Lead the development and implementation of physical and cultural behavioral H&S and Emergency Services  systems and processes within the site to meet the company goal of Zero Fatalities. Direct and manage the consistent application of Newmont  corporate standards and governance requirements for site teams and contractors. Appraise and audit the performance of the site to ensure compliance with Newmont  standards and governance requirements, key performance indicators and company core values such as Zero Fatalities. Develop monitoring and measurement criteria for H&S competency, in line of progression. Collate and analyze data from event investigations and other H&S sources to determine root causes and implement control measures that eliminate or mitigate workplace injuries and illnesses, and/or environmental damage and process losses. Assist all HOD’s in responding to inquiries lodged by local Regulatory agencies and the Public, regarding Health and Safety issues. Regional Management Budget and Cost Control. Plan for emergency preparedness and contingencies, and function as a crisis management team member.  Review and maintain current Emergency Evacuation Tactical and Trigger Action plans for the site and implement new planning format in conjunction with Health and Safety and super HR Group (HR, Site Services, L&D). Provide quality Medical Services on site and evacuation plans as required for any given condition. Assure that all site visitors and contractor´s comply with all the requirements, policies and standards of Newmont. Oversee all external H&S contractors working on-site within the mine and administer disciplinary actions, where appropriate.

Training and Experience

Bachelor’s degree or postgraduate in health and safety is desired, or relevant work experience in mining or heavy industry
Demonstrated excellence in technical knowledge of Health and Safety principles. Detailed knowledge and experience in conducting risk assessments and audit processes. Experience in implementing robust H&S processes in newly established and existing project teams. Minimum 5 - 10 years’ Health and Safety industry experience, experienced leader in H&S including experience in areas such as Surface and Underground Mining and Process Plant Operations. Demonstrated successes in working collaboratively in multi-cultural teams in expatriate settings. Advanced incident management skills, business continuity management skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, and communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills. Advanced relationship management skills. Assertive, Goal Oriented Influential, Integrity, Leadership, Confidential, Reliable, Safety Conscious.
