Exploration Geologist

Purpose

Provide geologic support to exploration, and development areas in order to discover and develop new economic ounces of gold, silver or copper and extend the mine life. Assist in the safe, and efficient mining and extraction of known mineral resources.

Essential Duties

General Duties:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, social responsibility, and the environment and the ability to work safely on a daily basis.
  • Interact effectively with all other Company groups or teams to support company needs, in a timely manner, proactive, with flexibility, and using best practices.
  • Gain familiarity with and apply appropriate Geology SOPs.
  • Build a good understanding of local and regional geology, including the identification of lithologies, alterations, and mineralogy in and around Yanacocha.
  • Assist with field related duties associated with the execution of drilling, and sampling.
  • Using established procedures, compile, correlate basic data, such as drillhole, cross-section preparation and drillhole entry into computer databases.
  • Using established procedures, collect basic geologic data, such as, rock samples, geological mapping, logging of core and drill cuttings under close supervision, and recording of geologic observations.
  • Register mapping, geochemical data, and other data, constructing maps and diagrams.
  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports such as monthly, quarterly, annual, project completion, and environmental regulatory reports. Computer drafting and graph/charts activities may be required.
  • Perform field sampling, sample preparation and shipping, as instructed. Verify and control accuracy and timeliness of sample processing and analyses requests and forms.
  • Perform data entry and database management functions as necessary.
  • Perform exploration drill supervision including logistical support as needed, quality control, termination of drill holes, and safety inspections.
  • Communicate well, both verbally and in written form, with diverse groups.
  • Remain abreast of current developments in the geological discipline through industry, government contacts and review of literature and professional organizations.
  • Assist with field related duties including equipment shipping/receiving, equipment maintenance, and transportation using four wheel drive vehicles.
  • Carry out other miscellaneous tasks assigned by supervisor according to abilities and training.

Exploration Specialized Duties:

  • Assist with field related duties of trenching, claim staking, geophysical, and geochemical programs, survey logistics, and grid surveying using conventional and GPS technology.
  • Using established procedures, collect basic geologic data, such as, geochemical samples (rock chip, stream sediment, BLEG, soil, etc.), and outcrop mapping. Register, plot, and graph geochemical data using approved systems and procedures.
  •  Familiar with Exploration specific SOPs.

 

Development Geology Specialized Duties:

  • Perform  detailed  mineralogical  sampling,  and  studies  under  close  supervision,  involving  a combination of methods such as XRD, MLA, TerraSpec, and polished sections. Registering, plotting, and compiling mineralogical data, and assisting with reports.
  • Perform geometallurgical sampling under close supervision and in close communication with the project metallurgical engineer. Assist with registering, plotting and compiling of data.
  • Assist with sample packaging and shipments of geometallurgical, and geotechnical samples under close supervision and in coordination with the project metallurgical engineer.
  • Familiar with geometallurgy, sampling and geotechnical sampling SOPs.

Essential Duties


Mine Geology Specialized Duties:

  • Perform ore control duties as required and according to supervisor’s direction and approved Geology SOPs. Duties will include blasthole mapping and creation of geosegments, supervision of blasthole sampling, monitoring of active mining faces, monitoring stockpiles and waste dumps, sampling for metallurgy, geotechnical, environmental, and other needs that may arise in operational areas.
  • Proactive communication with Engineering, Operations and Loss Control personnel.


Safety, Social Responsibility and Environment:

  • Comply with regulatory health and safety regulations, company policies and procedures and the
  • Company’s environmental compliance policy.
  • Report to your supervisor immediately if you feel you do not have sufficient training, or experience to do a job safely.
  • Understand and comply with Internal Regulation of Security and Occupational Health of MYSRL, issued under law 29783, DS 055-2010-EM and DS 005-2012-TR; as well as the rules regarding Security, Integrated Hygiene, and Environment contained in the Internal Regulation of Work and in the Code of Ethics and Conduct of MYSRL, the Loss Prevention Manual of MYSRL, the Internal Manual of Procedures and Rules (SOPs, PETs) of your work area and the activities of Loss Prevention programmed for your department.
  • Understand and demonstrate commitment and compliance, within the limits of your control when applicable to your activities, with the Declaration of Environmental Commitments of MYSRL, the environmental procedures of MYSRL and the responsibilities assigned and programmed for your department.
  • Demonstrate social sensitivity, commitment and compliance with the Social Responsibility policies of
  • Yanacocha. Maintain a socially responsible behavior with the Community and with the Company.

Training & Experience

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Geosciences or related field with knowledge of geological principles.
  • Technical skills learned at the university level are applied in the practical environment and developed through predominantly on-the-job training. Training focus is toward regional, local, or mine geologic settings. Activities are defined with supervisor guidance and significant training before releasing to sole responsibility.
  • Previous experience in mining or exploration preferred.
  • Knowledge of Word, Excel, and Power Point preferred.
  • Driver’s license A1, English spoken/written preferred.
  • Competency in working with teams, capacity to identify and solve problems and conflicts.
  • Plans work, dynamic, proactive, organizer, disciplined, responsible, and honest.
     

Working Conditions

  • Be able to work in mines, project sites, and/or greenfield exploration environments where conditions may be primitive and/or harsh at times. (Primitive /Harsh equals surface or underground conditions, remote field camps, high mountain terrain, steep rough terrain, long distance and/or time to advanced medical care.)
  • Walk on rough terrain and carry up to 20 kg for short distances.
  • Work in diverse climates, and at elevations of 4,000 meters.
  • Operate light vehicles safely, mount and dismount safely, in order to access various mine sitelocations.
  • Must be able to spend extended periods of time away from home base if required.
  • Occasionally operate specialized vehicles in a production environment both on the surface and underground, including a pre-operational inspection, mounting and dismounting, pushing and pulling levers and knobs, operating foot levers and turning steering wheels for the purpose of accessing various mine site locations.
  • Hear and smell sufficiently to distinguish warning alarms on surface and underground.
  • Wear personal protective equipment including hard hat, steel toe shoes, safety glasses, and other safety equipment required for the job.
  • May require working at other locations either nationally or internationally for extended periods of time to assist other teams.
  • Schedule 10 days on/ 10 days off
