About This Role
The Senior Geotechnical Project Engineer is responsible for the mid-long term geotechnical planning, design, remediation and operational support in this geotechnical challenging deep open pit gold mine. This role involves working within a dedicated team of engineers and technicians and working closely with other departments in the operation.
You will assist in establishing and maintaining geotechnical modelling, performing geotechnical analyses and providing geotechnical slope design recommendations for the interim and final pit walls. This includes ensuring geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological aspects are included in the slope designs and medium to long term mine planning. You will assist collating and analysing the monitoring and slope performance data in this fast paced operation.
In This Role You Will
- Ensure all work activities comply with the site Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) and assist in updating the GCMP as required.
- Implement and maintain geotechnical data collection programs. This information is obtained from many sources including but not limited to geotechnical monitoring, mapping, geotechnical drilling, groundwater monitoring, wall control evaluation, field testing and laboratory testing.
- Ensure all relevant data, information, studies, reports and accumulated knowledge is managed and maintained.
- Assist in maintaining geotechnical models e.g. rock mass model, geotechnical domain model, kinematic model and hydrogeological model.
- Provide remediation and stabilisation design recommendations where required and facilitate implementation.
- Establish and maintain monitoring programs around the mine.
- Perform hydrogeological modelling, interpretation and provide recommendations for pit slope depressurisation.
- Facilitate the integration of all geotechnical, geological and hydrogeological data into the design and construction of stable open pits and waste dumps.
- Interpret material parameters as required for various types of materials present.
- Perform geotechnical stability analyses with different methods (limit equilibrium, finite element, kinematic, probabilistic, etc.) as required to test stability of the various slope designs for different slope conditions to determine appropriate outcomes.
- Quarterly reporting of monitoring and mine performance as well as study reporting where required.
- Develop and implement innovations and seek continuous improvement.
- Assist in the development of the annual geotechnical budget.
- Assist in providing training to junior members of staff.
Your Skills, Training & Experience:
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Tertiary Qualification specialising in geomechanics.
- Chartered or Competent Person Status.
- Significant experience as a geotechnical engineer with a predominance of experience in hard rock mining.
- Project work experience in open pit studies including leading roles in PFS, FS and detailed design studies.
- Experience in designing remediation and mitigation strategies and practical experience implementing solutions.
- Competency in industry standard mine design, geotechnical & geological modelling software including related to slope stability. Experience using Rocscience (Slide, RS2, Dips, etc) and Gem4D software desirable.
- Competency in manipulating, interpreting and presenting geotechnical data including in MS Excel.
- Can demonstrate a desire to develop and test new theories, systems, tools evidenced by such things as published technical papers, major studies or projects.
- Experience using a wide range of risk based slope stability tools, systems and their application.
- Experience using slope stability radars, prism monitoring and familiarity with ground vibration monitoring systems.
- Competency in evaluating pit wall conditions and contributing to the evaluation of blasting outcomes on rock exposures.
