Senior Production Geologist

Purpose

  • Manage the gathering, interpretation and compilation of all geological information for the underground mine so that safe, efficient, and cost-effective production is attained.
  • Ensure that production targets in area of responsibility meet company goals.
  • Supervise and aid in the development of a production geology team providing geological support to the underground operation.
  • Develop and manage the infill diamond drilling program from a cost and productivity standpoint
  • Support the resource model functions to provide data and peer review for resource modeling in accordance with Newmont standards and guidelines.
  • Manage grade control activities to maximize the profitability and sustainability of the operation.

Safety and Sustainability Expectations

  • Accountable for own and the team’s health and safety performance. 
  • Ensure that all safety standards, policies, and procedures follow the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Mining Regulations and policies of other regulatory agencies and that these are adhered to in all circumstances.
  • Perform inspections, job and task observations to ensure compliance to fatality risk management safety standards.
  • Ensure Investigation of incidents, accidents and development of mitigating processes.
  • Enforce safety initiatives of contractors to ensure compliance with standards at or above Newmont  standards.
     

Essential Duties

Production Geology and Planning

  • Supervise daily grade control activities of production geologists in an active underground mining environment.
  • Provide support for the production and engineering groups.
  • Provide geological modeling, resource estimation, and production reconciliation, reviewing exploration initiatives and giving advice on ground control and drill and blast planning
  • Seek continual improvement of existing processes particularly with respect to grade control, ore accounting and resource estimation. 
  • Provide geological input for proposed new mining blocks
  • Provide monthly grade calculations and forecasts for both reporting and planning purposes.
  • Complete stope reconciliation reviews monthly.
  • Attend production, planning and management meetings.
  • Train and mentor team members to develop their skills and knowledge
  • Encourage all staff to increase their awareness of personal safety, IRS attitude, etc.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Maintenance to develop comprehensive medium- and short-term plans (mining and reserve replacement)  

 

Infill Diamond Drilling 
Verify Reserves by implementing infill Diamond Drilling Program:

  • Design and implement Diamond Drilling program to support mid and short term planning
  • Development & maintain departmental budget for drilling sampling and assaying. Manage departmental costs through contracts and monthly cost reviews.
  • Compile and manage incoming drilling data, interpret results, plot, present to management, engineering, planners on a timely basis.  Monitor QA-QC process. Calculate ore reserves/resources
  • Daily management-interaction of drilling contractors.  Perform safety inspections. Expedite re-supply of consumables.
  • Continual refinement of infill drilling process to optimize the use of resources
  • Train and mentor team members to develop their skills and knowledge of the deposits and exploration techniques.  Increasing exposure to geologic interpretation, resource modeling, prioritization of drill targets, contractor supervision, etc.
  • Encourage all staff to increase their awareness of personal safety, IRS attitude, etc.  

 

Reserve and Resource Estimation

  • Contribute to the ore reserves and resources calculation for the Underground Mine as per NI43-101 standards as needed for reporting purposes.
  • Update the geology model and support the resource model function. 
  • Guide Geologists in the resource reserve process

Training & Experience

  • B.Sc. in Geology or equivalent
  • Registration as a Professional Geoscientist or eligibility for such registration is required.
  • Ten years of geology experience of which 5 years should be in the mining and underground environment.
  • Two years in an intermediate to senior supervisory role.
  • Has shown responsibility for reviewing completed work, providing direction, assigning and managing tasks, managing progress, assessing performance, and providing opportunities for training and development.
  • Must have a strong geological knowledge and an extensive knowledge of mining and the associated Acts and Regulations.
  • Computer literacy and familiarity with modeling and estimation packages is essential, preferably with Leapfrog. Knowledge of geostatistics and proficiency in data management and report writing is required. 
  • Innovative and a proven ability to work with others.
  • Good planning and budgeting skills
     

Working Conditions

This position supports our Borden mine site in Chapleau, ON.
The schedule is 4 days on, 3 days off.
