Metallurgical Intern

This position will report to the Metallurgical Coordinator.  This position interacts with the Metallurgical Technicians, Mill Shifters, Mill Operators, Mill Planners, Millwrights and Assayers and will be responsible for performing circuit sampling and bench scale testing.



To perform plant sampling and laboratory testwork to ensure optimum metallurgical operation of the mill.  This includes sampling of the crushing, grinding, gravity, leach, carbon in pulp, elution and electrowinning circuits and performing laboratory testwork to ensure the key operating parameters are optimized. This position will assist the Metallurgical Coordinator in preparing, planning & executing new projects, which add value to the operation.  To compile key performance operating data, together with the Metallurgical Team, to routinely analyze  data so that proactive actions may be taken to ensure optimal operation.
Safety & Sustainability Expectations

  • Ensure that Newmont Porcupine safety policies and procedures are fully understood & followed when performing circuit sampling, bench scale testing & working as mill operators.
  • Ensure that metallurgical technicians and summer students working within the Metallurgical Team are working safely & in compliance with Newmont Porcupine safety policies & procedures
  • Ensure a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in the metallurgical laboratory

Essential Duties


Metallurgical Excellence

  • Work closely with the Metallurgical Coordinator, Metallurgical Technicians, Refiner & Operations in achieving optimum gold production, throughput, recovery and consumable costs.
  • Execute continuous improvement projects that are identified and proposed by the Metallurgical Coordinator in an organized and timely manner.
  • Compile and present key performance data so that the Metallurgical Supervisor can effectively analyze and evaluate overall mill performance on a daily basis.
  • Assist the Metallurgical Coordinator in troubleshooting and debottlenecking of the milling operation.


Safety Compliance

  • Work safely at all time and ensure that Newmont Porcupine safety policies and standard operating procedures are fully understood and followed.
  • Responsible for monitoring and improving safety performance of summer metallurgical students working in the metallurgical laboratory and performing circuit sampling.
  • Responsible for keeping a high standard of housekeeping in the metallurgical laboratory.



  • Participate in daily mill shifter/operator meeting and weekly metallurgical meetings.
  • Assist Metallurgical Coordinator in the preparation of new projects that are to be submitted to Mill Manager for approval.
  • Submit weekly work schedules and progress reports to the Metallurgical Coordinator.

Training & Experience


  • Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent metallurgical-related engineering degree
  • Registered as an EIT with Professional Engineers Ontario is preferred or must be eligible for EIT status within Professional Engineers Ontario
  • Pre-graduation or post-graduation experience in a metallurgical laboratory, pilot plant, or operating mill is highly regarded
  • Must have a basic understanding of gold milling operation.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision
  • Must have a positive attitude and committed to make changes that will positively impact costs and/or gold production
  • Must be able to communicate openly and effectively with mill employees

Working Conditions


  • This position is located at Dome, part of Newmont's Porcupine Mine near Timmins, ON.
  • In this role, you will work a 5x2 schedule.  As such, if you do not live near the site, we will require relocation.
