Employees in this classification provide a dual role.  Most importantly to provide GIS support support, produce, maintain and update various GIS data and detailed land control / land status maps by utilizing ArcGIS, Mapinfo and AutoCAD programs.  Secondary to assist in the role of Land Management assistant to provide support to maintain, track, record and fulfill all related land tenure commitments and obligations including legal and legislative requirements for Surface and Mining land tenure.

The GIS Analyst / Land Management Assistant role will report directly to Land Manager, Canada.  In this role you will act as a GIS Analyst to support land tenure GIS data management and mapping services to various sites within the jurisdiction of Ontario.  As well as to assist as Land Management Assistant, in this role you will act as a supporting land tenure specialist to maintain all types of Land Tenure and associated responsibilities.  A key element of this role is the ability to coordinate internally with various departments such as Exploration, Land / Legal, Environmental, and S&ER to coordinate and satisfy exploration and mining activities through supporting tenure applications, data and maintenance.


GIS Analyst / Mapping Services Duties:
•    Designs and administers geodatabases, GIS layers/views, knowledge in SQL Server, ArcGIS; Mapinfo, AutoCad;
•    Analyzes land legal descriptions (e.g., deeds, contracts, titles, maps, etc.) and produces, edits, and maintains accurate and detailed land spatial data;
•    Provides key GIS support for Landfolio, through creating, vetting, editing, and uploading spatial data, along with entering map references, editing the web map viewer, etc.;
•    Performs various other GIS/mapping tasks including georeferencing, digitizing, attribute data entry, metadata, coordinate system conversions, format conversions, definition queries, layer creation, etc.;
•    Ensures vetted spatial data is routinely provided to internal stakeholders to ensure critical decisions are being made with accurate maps.

Land Management Duties:
•    Assist with the management of land resources by ensuring all land is kept in “good standing” and available for mining and exploration, having regard for Best Land Management Practices and Newmont Land Standard.
•    Record, document and complete action items for land permits, tenure, leases, claims and agreements for land related tenures and land management responsibilities through the Trimble Landfolio Global Land Asset Management (GLAM) system having regard for the Newmont Land Standard.
•    Administer Land Tenure requirements through MNDM – MLAS Claim Services, file work assessment reports, prepare and file  distributions of credit, manage work reserve accounts, staking, and general administrative duties to support various applications such as Exploration Permits, Lease Applications, Lease Renewals and misc. administrative tasks.
•    Provide support for tenure management planning, competitor monitoring,  update and/or close actions related to the monthly 30-60-90 day reports, compile data for budget reviews and annual reporting.
•    Provide assistance to various projects and depts for Title Reviews, mapping and Due Diligence evaluations. 
•    Perform general clerical and administrative tasks while maintaining the integrity of electronic files, maps and land management databases
•    Contribute to the development of policies and procedures relating to land management 

Land Tax Management Duties:
•    Record, track and process the payment of all Provincial and Municipal tax and rent payments, coordinate with municipal and Government agencies to review property assessment
•    Assist Site Land Managers and the Exploration Geologist to budget and manage all taxes, rents, and agreements to maximize any potential cost savings adding to the long-term profitability of the operation.
•    Assist in maximizing any cost savings on Municipal taxation by preparing appropriate applications for vacancies, any request for reconsideration, or appeals, demolition and construction.
•    Assist Site Land Managers and / or Land Manager, Canada to analyze/estimate cost effect on tax base, and be proactive in pursuing any savings.



•    Post-secondary GIS / Mapping certification
•    Post-secondary education in Business Administration an asset
•    Three to Five five years’ work experience GIS Data Management, analysis
•    Two to three years’ work experience in mining land administration 
•    Trimble Landfolio and SAP Software Experience an asset
•    Well versed in ArcGIS and AutoCAD Platforms;.
•    Strong interpersonal and communication skills – both written and oral;
•    Self-starter with excellent time management and prioritization skills;
•    Ability to edit shapefiles, geodatabases, raster’s, and tabular information;
•    Good IT technical skills;
•    Excellent knowledge of coordinate and projection systems;
•    Exceptional attention to detail;
•    Exemplary analytical and problem-solving skills;
•    Ability to work under deadlines on multiple projects;
•    Adaptable to quick-paced, changing environment;
•    Ability to handle confidential and proprietary company data and information;
•    Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and willing to learn other computer applications, including, but not limited to, ArcGIS and Landfolio. Strong knowledge of land administration to operate within regulatory parameters of the Mining Act and other provincial acts.

Work Conditions

  • This is a temporary 10-month contract position located in Newmont’s North America Region (Canada).
  • Position offers flexible working conditions with a combination of remote work and travel to sites within North America Region and Denver corporate office as required.
