Newmont Tanami Operations provides a fully equipped 1200-bed village, 40km from the mine, offering modern leisure facilities to the workforce who FIFO direct from Darwin, Alice Springs, Perth and Brisbane.

The Role

Reporting to the HSS Superintendent, the Occupational Hygiene Advisor is responsible for providing technical support and advice to site in management of operational Occupational Hygiene (OH) risk. The Occupational Hygiene Advisor will develop, monitor and maintain processes required to effectively manage site OH risks.

The role is based in Tanami and offers an 8/6 FIFO roster from Perth, Darwin & Alice Springs, and Brisbane ONLY.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Effectively identify, assess and communicate control requirements for existing and emerging site OH risks (inclusive of dusts, diesel particulate, noise/vibration, metal fumes, vapours, gases, mineral fibres, heat stress and potable water);
  • Manage planning and completion of site OH monitoring activities in accordance with internal and regulatory requirements. Regular completion of sampling/monitoring will be required of the role;
  • Ensure all site OH programs are conducted in accordance with applicable industry, regulatory and internal standards (inclusive of Health Monitoring);
  • Manage OH approvals and risk assessments for hazardous materials in the site ChemAlert system;
  • Ensure accurate site OH records are maintained in accordance with internal requirements (inclusive of Cority database); and
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting to relevant internal/external stakeholders.

The Person

  • Tertiary qualifications in Occupational Hygiene (preferred), OHS or Applied Science (required);
  • Certificate IV in Surface Ventilation Officer or equivalent (Required);
  • Noise Officer Qualification (Required);
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in full time Occupational Hygiene Practice in a heavy industry / mining environment;
  • Detailed knowledge of industry standards and legislation applicable to the role;
  • Full (preferred) or Provisional (required) Membership of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists, or eligibility to obtain;
  • Internal auditor qualification (preferred);
  • Sound understanding of Integrated Management Systems and risk management principles;
  • Demonstrates strong analytical and problem solving skills and is capable of providing practical solutions to business leaders;
  • Ability to manage and priorities multiple projects and tasks at the same time; and
  • Ability to maintain detailed accurate records and prepare required reports for the role.
