Purpose

The Industrial Refrigeration Mechanic I will work as part of a team that is responsible for repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of large cooling and refrigeration systems deployed in installations, which affect the availability of critical equipment. Medium – and High voltage variable frequency drive systems require efficient cooling. The Industrial Refrigeration Mechanic ensures the availability of electrical systems by maintaining cooling systems according to maintenance schedules. 

Essential Duties

  • Meeting with maintenance team members to discuss safety and any recent incidents on site as well as hazard control.
  • Information pertaining to any site notices and breakdowns as discussed, with jobs allocated to the appropriate maintenance staff member.
  • Maintain tools & equipment and ensure proper staging of all parts and supplies are in order.
  • Assist in the performance of tasks associated with maintenance of Air conditioning and refrigeration units.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairing faulty equipment.
  • Perform housekeeping and cleaning and general preventive maintenance as directed.
  • Act as a safety observer/spotter.
  • Assist with cleaning out cooling towers, requiring changing of the gates on the outside, draining water tanks underneath the cooling towers. 
  • Check motor and fans.

Training & Experience

  • Secondary School Diploma (MULO/LBO/LTO)
  • Minimum, a basic electrical knowledge/certification from a recognized training institute (SAO)
  • Minimum 2 years industry experience, preferable in mining, processing, chemical plant, refinery, hospital or other critical equipment environment.
  • Working experience maintaining and repairing heating ventilation and air conditioning systems and other related systems.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Dutch. 
  • Must be able to read written work instructions in English and Dutch.
  • Strong ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with customers, colleagues and supervisors.
  • Ability to formulate a structured, logical approach to maintenance activity and problem solving.
  • Strong ability to quickly and correctly diagnose, locate and fix defects in refrigeration and air conditioning systems/units and similar equipment. 
  • A strong commitment to work safety.
  • Competent using a range of hand and powered tools.
     

Working Conditions

  • The position is located at the Merian Mine site.
  • Capable and willing to work up to 10 hours for 14 days in a remote mine-site camp location followed by 7 days off on a rotational basis (14 days / 7 days Roster).
  • Wear all personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, longs sleeved shirts, or any other equipment to perform duties safely as required by the Health and Safety plan.  
  • Must be capable and willing to work for extended periods outdoors in a tropical climate.
  • Exposure to weather conditions, including extremes in temperature, wind and rain.
