Purpose

The primary purpose of this role is to train Newmont staff and Business Partners in Standard Operation and Task Procedures according to Newmont standards. The coordinator will assist the Technical Training department in developing, implementing, and operating integrated skills, occupational health, safety, and training management systems to recognized company standards.

The coordinator will be proficient and competent to provide training to all Newmont Employees and Business Partners. They will schedule training to ensure that all employees and Business Partners receive the knowledge and practical training to be a safe and productive contributor in their assigned role to the operation.

The coordinator will maintain communications and relationships with all stakeholders of the operation (department Heads, Supervisors, workers, etc.) to ensure training needs are identified and addressed in a timely manner and risks associated with the business are reduced in order to build and maintain a safe, cost-effective, and productive operation.
 

Essential Duties

Health & Safety

  • Report to work physically fit.
  • Ensure Newmont- and Business Partner Trainers perform tasks safely and efficiently.
  • Perform daily workplace inspections to identify hazards and assign actions for resolution of identified hazards.
  • Report safety incidents and support investigations.
  • Complete safety training and certification as required by site and departmental procedure.
  • Be a courageous Safety Leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures.
  • Ensure department’s compliance with the requirement of Government of Suriname’s Agencies, shareholders’ environmental, health and Safety legislation and company regulations.

Strategy and Procedure Development

  • Follow and implement all established safe and efficient procedures for all routine tasks in compliance with legislation and Newmont Standards.
  • Manage and Maintain Training Records and Reports
  • Quality Control all training records, training material and the execution of training by each trainer.

Training duties:

  • Ensure that employees are trained, mentored, and coached in a responsible, safe, effective, and productive operation.
  • Work closely with departmental Leaders (Superintendent, General Forepersons and supervisors to ensure that all trainers meet all competency requirements and receive the Train the Trainer training.
  • Ensure that all Trainers provide follow-ups and refresher training to all employees, contractors, and visitors to the site as scheduled.
  • Develop and implement initial and recurrent training programs.
  • Identify training and development needs of the workforce by conducting regular assessments and testing as outlined per curriculum.
  • Plan and manage effective and efficient training schedules by liaising with department leadership.
  • Maintain accurate recordkeeping of all training and assessment activities, safety, personnel, attendance of participants and production activities.
  • Perform proper leave management and ensure there are sufficient persons onsite to continue operation.

Training & Experience

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Higher Education (Bachelor Degree or Master Degree) or the combination of Secondary Education (HAVO/VWO/NATIN/ AMTO/ LOBO) and Prior Learning Assessment with a minimum 10 years of work experience in related field.
  • Pedagogical / workplace training assessment IV education / certification.
  • Government driver’s license B, C & E.
  • Basic Front line supervisor certificate.
  • First Aid Certificate

Knowledge: 

  • Excellent time management skills.

  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills (EXCEL, WORD, POWERPOINT, OUTLOOK)
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent LMS (Learning Management System) skills 
  • Of how operations impacts health and reliability of mining equipment’s.
  • Of open pit gold mining operations.

Experience: 

  • Minimum 10 years’ experience working an open pit gold mining operation.
  • Cultural awareness, respectful towards others and an understanding of different learning styles and principles as it relates to adult learning.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Able to show and have a supportive, positive approach to training and development of each employee and business partner.
  • Able to interact with employees at various levels in the organization
  • Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel applications
  • Demonstrate proficiency in written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent Sranan Tongo, Dutch and English language skills are required. Written and Speaking.

  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with peers and supervisor.

Working Conditions

  • The position is located on the Merian mine site in Suriname, working in the mine conducting on the job training performing simulator training in a designated area. 
  • The administrative part of the work will be performed in a shared office.
  • Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment.
  • Accommodation is in a man camp/village environment near the workplace.
  • Position may require traveling to and/or assisting of other domestic sites.
