Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Purpose

The Project Engineer is tasked with the management and support of projects, process improvements, and development opportunities. They will hold responsibility for overseeing day-to-day planning and engineering initiatives. With a primary focus on continuous development, the Project Engineer will identify operational challenges or growth opportunities and manage the process of developing feasible solutions to address them. Leveraging expertise across various engineering disciplines, they will guide the engineering process for the selected solution, lead design reviews at various engineering stages, and manage the planning process for the execution of the engineered solution. Additionally, the Project Engineer will collaborate with other engineers to ensure effective project execution and foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the engineering team.

Essential Duties

1.Project Planning and Coordination: Collaborate with stakeholders to define project scope, objectives, and deliverables, and develop comprehensive project plans, timelines, and budgets to ensure alignment with organizational goals and objectives. 

2.Engineering Design: Work closely with engineering teams to develop detailed design specifications, engineering drawings, and technical documentation for capital projects, ensuring compliance with Newmont standards, regulatory requirements, and stakeholder specifications. 

3.Procurement and Resource Management: Coordinate procurement activities, including vendor selection, contract negotiation, and material sourcing, to ensure timely delivery of equipment, materials, and services required for project execution, while optimizing cost-effectiveness and quality. 

4.Construction Oversight: Provide on-site support and technical guidance during the construction phase of capital projects, overseeing contractors, subcontractors, and construction crews to ensure adherence to project specifications, safety protocols, and quality standards. 

5.Quality Assurance and Control: Implement robust quality control measures and inspection protocols to monitor workmanship, identify defects, and ensure compliance with engineering standards and project requirements throughout the construction process. 

6.Risk Management: Identify potential risks and develop mitigation strategies to address technical, financial, and logistical challenges that may impact project delivery, proactively resolving issues and minimizing disruptions to project timelines and objectives. 

7.Project Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate project documentation, including progress reports, change orders, and as-built drawings, and provide regular updates to stakeholders and senior management on project status, milestones, and key performance indicators. 

8.Safety and Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant health, safety, and environmental regulations, policies, and procedures, promoting a culture of safety awareness and accountability among project team members and subcontractors.
 

Training & Experience

Knowledge: 

  • Bachelors of Science in an engineering discipline and/or Construction Management. 

Experience: 

  • Minimum 5 years practical experience in engineering, construction and mining operations.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in project management methodologies, engineering design software, and Microsoft Office Suite, with experience using project management tools such as Microsoft Project. 
  • Strong technical knowledge of engineering principles, construction practices, and regulatory requirements related to capital projects in the mining sector. 
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders, resolve conflicts, and drive consensus in a dynamic project environment. 
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to anticipate project risks and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
     

Working Conditions

  • Able to work at the Merian Site, a remote area 
  • Able to live for 14 days in a Camp environment 
  • Able to deal with different cultures
