The Principal Advisor Processing is responsible for identifying, developing and driving continuous improvement opportunities in the technical services departments and process plant operations, thereby contributing to increased safety and production and reduced risk and costs to the region.

Essential Duties

  • Review the application of processing technologies and methods and recommend future improvement opportunities, where applicable.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement to manage process risks and support the operations with process safety
  • Identify production constraints and waste areas across all process plant operations. Work with process operations to manage improvement opportunities.
  • Manage the development and implementation of systems and standards for the operation of processing plants.
  • Provide support to the asset integrity programs for the process plants
  • Provide support to the regional Projects team throughout all stages of  the project definition, review and approval cycle and provide ongoing technical support for the implementation of key growth, sustaining and closure projects at the operations.
  • Identify processing ideas / opportunities that will provide the biggest returns and provide advice to the business about these. Support these opportunities to ensure implementation in a timely manner. Provide input into and conduct studies to support such improvements as agreed by the General Manager Operational Services.
  • Challenge the status quo of processing methods and research and recommend best practice. Remain abreast of current technologies within and external to Newmont.
  • Support the development of the processing department LOM Business Plan and Strategic Plans for each operation;
    • Ensure that the development of assumptions are aligned with South America and Global requirements
    • Review the processing department physicals, capital and operating cost requirements
    • Assist in the identification of cost reduction initiatives to achieve the Global and South America cost reduction targets
    • Ensure that the metallurgical assumptions for reserves and mine plans are robust and support the LOM Business Plans
    • Ensure the future RDA Planning & Costs are incorporated into LOM plans
  • Assist in the development and review of LOM Business Plans for all South America sites on an as required basis as directed by the General Manager Operational Services
  • Perform peer review of AFEs relating to the processing plants   
  • Ensure that future ore bodies identified for resource / reserve estimation are well supported by metallurgical testing and documentation in order to support the life of mine plan.
  • Mentor regional metallurgical personnel, identify and coordinate their development needs and manage the succession plan
  • Manage R&D projects for alignment and information exchange across sites and present business plans for future R&D projects to the General Manager Operational Services

Training & Experience

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification.
  • In excess of 15 years processing plant experience
  • Experience in operations management on a large mine site.
  • Deep understanding of processes and tools associated with quality management.
  • Strong project management experience.
  • Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software.
  • Strong technical report writing skills and problem solving ability
  • Ability to teach and mentor others
  • High level of energy, sense of urgency and passion for continuous improvement.
  • Ability to gain credibility and respect from operating areas.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and execute cross-functional projects and initiatives through multiple levels and functional areas in the organisation.
  • Ability to execute through impact and influence vs. line authority.

Working Conditions

Working Conditions/Environment

The Principal Advisor Processing is based in the regional office in Miami, USA.  Performance of the work requires travel (~25% of work time) principally to the South America operations.


Working Relationships

  • This position is responsible to the General Manager Operational Services.
  • The position is one of several in a larger Operations Support team that is focussed on amalgamating technical and commercial expertise while working closely with site management teams and regional functional teams to optimise mining and processing operations in the South America region.
  • This position will engage with the various South America functions and also with project teams working on specific growth, sustaining and closure projects.
  • This position will work with the regional teams and external service providers to support external R&D projects, ensuring information exchange and alignment across sites.
  • Effective execution of the job requires frequent interaction/communication with the technical service and process managers, operational managers, and mining technical personnel as well as the business planning function for South America.
