Technical Services provides global support to Newmont Goldcorp and its operating businesses across a range of specialised technical functions.  Technical Services expertise covers all key resource industry disciplines, including Resource Modelling, Reserves & Resources, Mine Engineering, Mineral Processing & Metallurgy, Asset Management, Operational Technology and Business Improvement, Supply Chain, and IT. 

Within Technical Services, the Operational Technology and Business Improvement (OT&BI) function is responsible for the successful design and delivery of Newmont Goldcorp’s digital strategy so that operating technology becomes a source of considerable and sustainable competitive advantage.  OT&BI adds value by focusing on the selection, deployment, leveraged application, support and ongoing development of a common and consistent suite of critical enabling technology in the business. This relies on process standardization, proactive collaboration, governance, change management, vendor relationships, personnel competency, communication and reporting.

The primary focus of this role is to work within Newmont Goldcorp’s OT&BI global operating model with a focus on open pit mining. This model delivers a globally consistent, fully integrated suite of digital solutions to support operations management. This role focuses on operating technology including automation and control, fleet management, positioning systems, safe production systems and related emerging technologies. The model comprises software, hardware and firmware from multiple vendors, aligned with the digital strategy, to provide a well-supported, configurable, leading edge mining solution unique to Newmont.  The role seeks to turn data into insight, in a timely manner, to support improved decision making.

This is both a leadership and execution role that draws on expertise as a project manager, change agent, technical subject matter expert, systems specialist, problem solver and facilitator in delivering and improving the OT&BI mining strategy. 

The role is required to engage effectively with a wide range of site, regional and corporate stakeholders within Newmont Goldcorp – most frequently at Superintendent and Manager level, but up to General Manager.  The role also engages at all levels within the vendor organisations to foster deep and open relationships where justified.

Essential Duties

Safety and Health - Demonstrate proactive leadership in achieving a global Newmont Goldcorp culture of Safety and Health including maintaining a high focus on safety within the OT&BI function and actively promoting Newmont Goldcorp’s safety standards during all site engagements.
Strategy and alignment – Further define and deliver aspects of the OT&BI global operating model related to open pit mining. Understand and refine current and future business requirements and support needs related to automation and control, fleet management, positioning systems, safe production systems and related emerging technologies. Evaluate how available and developing technologies may improve safety, operating effectiveness, efficiency and productivity. Engage with Technical Services functions. This includes strong collaboration with Mine Engineering, Asset Management and Mineral Processing & Metallurgy for alignment around approach and business impacts.
Program Governance – Apply a Prince 2 (or similar) methodology variant to ensure that OT&BI open pit mining initiatives are managed appropriately before, during and post implementation. This approach encompasses formalized use of tools and templates, rigorous document control and knowledge management, and a comprehensive matrix of formal governance meetings.
Build Management – Lead the ongoing development of and value delivery from the OT&BI global operating model related to open pit mining. This includes pilot design and execution, Stage Gate Investment delivery, the ongoing development of integrated on-board systems and interfaces, PLC/DCS type data acquisition and control of infrastructure, wireless communication technologies, integrated office technologies, data analytics, reporting, interfaces to Newmont Goldcorp’s SAP solutions and supporting system documentation and training.
Contract Management – Represent the open pit community technically in global umbrella agreements with key vendors including Caterpillar, Epiroc, Hitachi, Komatsu, Sandvik, Hexagon Mining etc. This activity includes regular monitoring of contract performance, liaising with regions and sites to ensure they understand and capitalize on contract provisions, providing a dispute escalation and resolution process, driving their development roadmap, and supporting Supply Chain in contract negotiation processes.
Implementation Support – Support site implementation efforts related to operating technology for open pit mining including promoting system capability to senior site and business unit leaders, the development of the business case and AFE, liaising with software and hardware vendors, assisting in development of the project schedule, conducting current state assessments, redesigning business processes, conducting RACI workshops, conducting criticality reviews and developing business and system rules.
Post Implementation Support - Undertaking best practice assessments using workshops, interviews and data collection techniques to identify improvement opportunities related to open pit operating technology.  Establish and facilitate Communities of Practice within Newmont Goldcorp to share best practice.
Value Tracking and Reporting – Assist regions and sites to develop tools and approaches to consistently and routinely track and report value delivered through open pit operating technology practices. Ensure scorecards of key KPIs and metrics are agreed, established and implemented for monitoring and reporting.

Training & Experience

Degree qualification in Engineering or related discipline
At least 10 years’ relevant experience with open pit, hardrock mining operations involving mine engineering, operations, safety, maintenance and technology roles
Proven experience in defining, developing and implementing value adding operating technology in hardrock open pit mines, consistent with an agreed road map
Hands on experience with implementing and operating autonomous haulage systems or autonomous drilling systems in large, open pits
Demonstrated competence in all aspects of the scoping, execution and assessment of structured proof of concept type programs to aid in the definition, selection or leverage of leading practice operating technology
Leading teams and managing people in mining operations
History of effective Change Management implementation and participation related to operating technology
A deep knowledge of open pit mining equipment and infrastructure
Seasoned knowledge of open pit mine design, mining methods, production scheduling, equipment selection and operation, maintenance and expert systems
History of ensuring safe operating practices with zero harm objectives
Strong technical writing, group presentation, and interpersonal skills including cultural sensitivity,
Familiarity with business systems and standard office application software
A proven track record of effective, collaborative engagement with internal customer groups including understanding needs and delivery of value adding solutions
Strong data acquisition and analysis skills
Proven ability to work closely and collaboratively with IT
Proven Project Management skills or certification
Experience in cross-functional team assignment(s)
Understanding of the end-to-end value chain and data flow for mining. This includes the demonstrated ability to develop and deliver accurate cash flows and financial models to monetize the benefits of initiatives.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as the ability to liaise at a high level with a diverse range of interdepartmental team members and vendors
Self-motivated and detail oriented with the ability to work with minimal supervision
Ability to work collaboratively and build strong working relationships with operators, SMEs, managers, technical experts, practitioners and vendors
The ability to work flexibly to meet the frequent out of normal office hours and national/international travel requirements related to executing the global operating model
Current Driver’s Licence and Passport.
Post Graduate qualification in robotics/automation/electronics or business administration
A strong interest in control systems and communications
Understanding of positioning, proximity and communications systems in mining
Previous overseas work experience
Knowledge of equipment mechanics and electronics
SAP system knowledge
Strong financial analysis skills
Closed-loop control systems and control systems understanding
