Intern - External Relations

Purpose

 

External Relations works to obtain and strengthen broad social acceptance before, during, and beyond the life of a mine. The Social Responsibility sub-function supports the work with neighboring communities at each of Newmont’s sites while the External Relations sub-function builds relationships with global, national, and regional stakeholders.

Essential Duties

 

Summer intern positions begin in April 2020 and conclude in December 2020. The exact dates are flexible depending on each student’s availability and our business need.  Our internships are full-time paid positions (40 hours/week).
This internship is based at our corporate headquarters in Greenwood Village, CO.  It is possible some travel may be required to one or more of Newmont’s sites, but this is not guaranteed. There is ample opportunity for internal networking within our company.
As an intern, you will be responsible for implementing specific Social Responsibility and External Relations projects, as well as supporting the day-to-day activities of your department. The exact projects will be established according to your availability, interest, skills, and experience, in addition to the specific business needs.

 

Possible projects include:

  • Research into multiple topics including: human rights, community development, responsible sourcing, artisanal and small scale mining, sustainable development goals (SDGs)
  • Benchmarking studies of industry best practices on a range of issues
  • General support to Newmont sites for data analysis and reporting of community relations performance
  • Specific support related to Newmont’s sustainability reporting (Beyond the Mine) on the areas mentioned above
  • Support development of Newmont’s Integrated Management System databases and documentation

 

The above duties and responsibilities are representative of the nature and level of work; other work may also be assigned.

Training & Experience

 

  • Undergraduate/Graduate/Doctoral students preferred, graduating in December 2020 or later –degrees in International Studies, International Development, or other sustainability-related fields. We will consider other similar disciplines.
  • Experience in mining and/or passion to learn about the industry, particularly as it relates to sustainability,
  • Strong organization, project and time management skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; comfort engaging with senior leaders and global teams
  • Strong research methods capability and writing skills
  • At least a 3.0 GPA or equivalent
  • Valid work authorization to work in the United States for this position. 
     
Working Conditions

 

  • This is a mix of part-time (10-20 hours per week) and full-time (40 hours per week), paid internship that will run from approximately April 2020 thru December 2020 depending on the selected student's school schedule.
  • This role will be located at our Corporate Headquarters located in Greenwood Village, CO.
