Join a strong, experienced team where you can contribute to Newmont’s social responsibility by ensuring compliance with environmental permits and plans.  Conduct Environmental Compliance & Permitting on Exploration Plan and Notice-level projects outside of the mine operations throughout the State of Nevada and less frequently in other western States or Canadian provinces, if requested.

Essential Duties

  • Completes all assignments with a proactive “Safety First” attitude.  Promotes a culture of the Newmont Safety Journey’s vital behavior principles.
  • Provide a personal and active approach to environmental stewardship and promote a culture where environmental compliance emphasizes personal awareness and responsibility.
  • Collect and track environmental-related data at active and non-active exploration projects for future agency-required report submissions.
  • Plan and coordinate with Newmont’s  Drill Services group and geologists in conducting best practices earthwork, drilling, fluid management, seeding, and noxious weed control at exploration sites requiring reclamation activity.
  • Collaborate closely with personnel in Newmont’s Geology and Land groups in staying providing SER guidance on short and longer term exploration planning and land management goals.
  • Assists other S&ER employees and Elko Land and Livestock Company (a Newmont entity) in the application of the recently developed Conservation Credit System designed to mitigate wildlife habitat loss from surface disturbing projects.
  • Assists Elko Land and Livestock Company on related land and conservation programs and procedures.
  • Use environmental and geological databases to research historic drilling activities to determine closure responsibility related to historic open file BLM exploration notices.
  • Monitors the site-specific permit requirements and determines compliance.
  • Champion’s the compliance aspects of the internal Standard Operating Procedure’s and suggest any changes for improvements.
  • Actively employs “Best Practice” reclamation and compliance implementation tools and seeks to improve those Best Practices. 
  • Provides guidance and assists compliance with the environmental and social responsibility aspects of Newmont’s Exploration Sustainability and External Relations Guidebook. Trains geologists in the use of the Guidebook and stakeholder engagement plans.
  • Actively implements exploration footprint minimization tactics.
  • May at times implement small weed control and seeding treatments on reclamation areas needing attention.
  • Work with consultants in directing reclamation earthwork, seeding, and invasive weed control plans.
  • Work closely with agencies to identify and secure/close hazardous abandoned mine features such as shafts and tunnels.
  • Contract with consultants to conduct either agency or Newmont required wildlife or vegetative surveys. Utilize survey results to minimize impact to wildlife species.
  • Use monitoring systems to track project permitting/compliance/reclamation on active and non-active notice and plan-level projects.
  • Assists federal or state agency mineral specialists in the field with their inspections of active exploration areas, recently reclaimed exploration areas, and historic exploration areas.
  • Participate in and update hazardous material/waste minimization, handling and disposal protocols.

Training & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree and 3 years of experience or 5+ years of applicable experience
  • Work experience in a mining/exploration, governmental, or scientific community would be an asset. 

Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience or knowledge with exploration drilling techniques used to manage drilling fluids.
  • Experience or knowledge of drill hole plugging procedures.
  • Must have ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Word, Excel applications and environmental and geological data bases.
  • Strong PC skills using MS office software
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely while following applicable safety regulations and procedures.
  • Able or capable of using a camera, GIS equipment and maps.
  • Use of computer mapping systems. Arc View knowledge a plus.
  • Able or capable of visually identifying reclamation plant species and invasive weed species.

Working Conditions

  • Frequently exposed to outside weather conditions.
  • Exposed to Operating Drill Rigs and Drill Support equipment; high elevation sites and precarious terrain.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
  • At times be required to travel long distances and lodge in stakeholder communities away from home.
  • While in the field, must be capable of using his/her vehicle as an office space.
