About this role

What you will be responsible for?
Attends to the development of strategy, standards, processes and procedures related to external relations for the corporation. Engages with regional leadership teams, particularly S&ER leaders, on local execution of external relations strategy and provides appropriate services and support. This role will establish standards and procedures for engaging with NGOs and other key external partners to build and maintain reputation. Ensures measurement systems are developed, implemented and reported on in a manner that demonstrates sustainability leadership.
 

In this rolw you will

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • We lead and coordinate the External Relations function at the Corporate location. 
  • We develop enterprise-level External Relations strategy and plans for execution, incorporating points of connection with regional and country level initiatives.
  • We contribute external relations and related emerging risk insights to the improvements of the global S&ER strategy.
  • We develop and implements a framework to handle emerging risk globally and locally, including scanning for trends in NGO activity, communicating them to affected functions or regions, and developing mentorship for mitigation. 
  • We coordinate and guide regional External Relations activities to ensure consistent alignment with strategy and goals. Support the Exploration and Project teams in all aspects of external partnerships, including assistance on potential issues and remediation.
  • We develop global External Relations policies and standards. Ensure related governance is adopted and adhered to by regional and local teams. This includes our strategic approach and positions on how the company will engage with NGOs and external partners.
  • We set, coordinate and measure functional performance targets. Supervise corrective actions resulting from audits of company social standards.
  • We contribute to Sustainability Reporting initiatives.
  • We establish an internal/external network of external relations resources for best-practice and knowledge sharing.
  • We build relationships and maintains direct contact with relevant associations, industry peers, NGO’s, funding agencies, and other international organizations to help further the company’s external relations goals.
  • We retain the consultation, development and implementation of strategies to coordinate, prioritize and lead emerging risks that impact the global business.

Education: 

  • Position requires a bachelor’s degree in International Relations, Political Science or Social Science, Environmental Management with relevant experiences. Master’s Degree preferred.

Experience: 

  • 15-20 years of experience in the area of external relations, sustainability, international level communications.
  • Direct experience in mining or other extractive industry strongly preferred. 
  • Global experience; particularly in developing countries or with emerging economies, is required.
  • Experience interacting with industry associations, government agencies, NGOs & civil society institutions and academia.

Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strategic thinking; incorporating multiple, diverse perspectives into and coordinated government relations framework; development of 3-5 year strategic plan.
  • Analytic thinking; breaks down tough problems to find workable solutions.
  • Building and guiding a team (direct and indirect reports) of subject matter experts in the area of External Relations; managing team performance through direction-setting and mentorship.
  • Change leadership; relationship building and influence tactics. Interpret and build relationships with independent agencies, NGOs or networks that strengthen and sustain Newmont’s competitive advantage. 
  • Strong cultural knowledge and awareness; adjusting behavior and style to suit local requirements. Understanding and building relationships with external partners, associations and other collaborators.
  • Building credibility with Corporate and Region executives; presentation and inter-relationship skills.
  • Poise and demonstrating confidence; representing the company’s brand, reputation and relationships in countries where business is currently conducted. 
  • Diplomacy; engaging with potential adversaries on contentious issues while maintaining an ability to collaborate. Advocating for the company in a respectful way.
  • Proactive environment scanning to identify emerging risk areas within the company.
  • Forming networks and forums for sharing knowledge, experience, resources and skills.
  • Character building and teamwork skills; ability to work across lines of formal authority to get things done or move multiple organizations in the same direction.
  • Foreign language proficiency (e.g., Spanish, French and/or Dutch) desirable. 

Working conditions & location

Where you will be located!

  • Located in the Denver corporate office.
  • Significant travel required to regional offices and operating sites. 

The salary range offered for this role is $186,745 to 230,685. The salary range is tied to the Colorado market for jobs performed in Colorado. The salary offer to the successful candidate will be based on job-related education, training, and/or experience.  The salary offer will not be based on a candidate’s salary history at other jobs, and by law, Newmont will not seek information about salary history, and candidates should not share such information with Newmont.  

This role will be eligible for participation in a discretionary annual bonus program, pursuant to which an employee may be awarded a percentage of their salary based on the company’s performance and their own individual performance. This role also will be eligible for participation in a discretionary long-term incentive program, pursuant to which an employee may receive awards based on their level and individual performance.
