The Community Relations Manager will serve on the Site Leadership Team of Cripple Creek and Victor (CC&V) operation in southern Colorado, and be a key member of Newmont North America's External Reltions Team. You will be accountable to develop and implement a strategy to obtain and maintain long term social acceptance and reputation of the operation throughout the mining lifecycle.

Essential Duties
  • Provide strategic leadership direction and a compelling vision for a team-focused culture in CC&V’s External Relations Department. Assure alignment with Newmont’s SOPs, standards, internal guidance and the critical elements of building and nurturing public trust through open and transparent operations.
  • Understand the opportunities, challenges, trends, issues and risks in the external landscape through stakeholder engagement; prioritize community engagement of the department staff, SLT members and other employees to ensure a strong understanding of issues and public sentiment and to identify emerging issues and develop cohesive strategies. Provide counsel to the CC&V management team regarding its unique leadership role in the community.
  • Develop and implement communication (internal and external) and stakeholder engagement strategies to enable Newmont to achieve and maintain a license to operate and grow.
  • Proactively ensure external stakeholder perspectives are recognized and considered in major business decisions and recommendations; share constructive feedback with members of CC&V’s SLT.
  • Work closely with Environmental Department on permitting and regulatory compliance issues.
  • Manage CC&V Community Investment Program; broaden and diversify CC&V’s external partnerships.
  • Prioritize resources and track desired outcomes for tours, public educational outreach activities and events, and sponsorships. Leverage the Newmont brand and reputation to make a positive impact in southern Colorado.
  • Act as official spokesperson and media contact; manage social media; assist with internal communications; serve on site Rapid Response team; represent company at community events.
  • Prepare, monitor and control the community relations departmental budget and make decisions regarding expenditures while managing costs in an effective manner.
  • Manages community relations staff to ensure they acquire necessary skills and experience to achieve high levels of performance.

Training & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred with major in communications, public relations, journalism, or similar discipline. Degree may be substituted with 3 additional years of work experience in a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive external relations experience including leadership responsibility for public relations strategy development and implementation.
  • Advanced technical skills must include proficient use of Microsoft Office Software, skilled proofreading and editing, and proficiency with popular forms of social media.
  • Knowledge of mining operations, the mine lifecycle and Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations.
  • Ability to anticipate needs and respond rapidly as challenges surface and prioritize accordingly; skilled at embracing change in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have exceptional persuasive and strategic communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the details of complex issues without losing sight of broader long-term perspectives on how issues may impact the business.
  • High level of diplomacy, tact and discretion.
  • Ability to create engaging relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders through trust, respect, accountability, teamwork and effective communication.
  • Skilled at delivering clear and concise written and verbal communication to provide direction, encourage dialogue, and seek understanding. Ability to develop and articulate key messages in a persuasive and targeted manner.
  • Offer clarity around goals and objectives ensuring that all team members work collaboratively towards a shared purpose.
  • Demonstrate integrity, honesty, compassion, courage, optimism, and good judgment in all actions and decisions; high level of professionalism and business acumen.
  • Effectively engage and align a multitude of diverse expectations and perspectives to promote a culture of inclusion and diversity.
