About this role

 

What will you be responsible for?

 

Manages the development and execution of sustainable capital projects to continue current mine operations. This includes expenditure for compliance, replacement or improvement purposes, major maintenance, mine expansions (i.e. tailings facilities, surface support facilities), cost reduction, and all other mine development project investments following the company‘s investment and project management standards.

Accountable for the preparation and execution of projects from stages 3 to 5 which includes organizing, staffing, hiring, purchasing, supervising, and controlling all safety, quality, engineering, procurement, construction, and preproduction activities required to attain commercial production. Manages contractors, construction workers, engineers, and associated staff on green field and/or brownfield projects with peak staffing up to ~200. Scope of effort for the position involves projects up to $15-20M of capital expenditure

 

 

In this role you will

 

Here is a snapshot of what your day to day will look like:

  • Liaise with the Owner’s Operations Team on the planning, development, and execution of sustainable capital projects minimizing disruption to operations activities.
  • Review the site requirements for temporary facilities, site services, laydown areas etc. in respect of timing, size, and cost to support the execution of sustainable capital projects.
  • Act as primary liaison with the EPC (or EPCM) Contractor’s construction team and manage their site activities per requirements in the prime Agreement. 
  • Directs the execution planning, design, engineering, procurement, cost, scheduling, and construction activities by coordinating efforts of various internal departments, project development teams, and outside consulting resources.
  • Monitor construction progress, and in particular the critical path, in conjunction with the Owner’s Project Team so that schedule slippage can be monitored and the effects minimized. 
  • Provide oversight of the Contractor’s and Owner´s Health and Safety Program, Environmental Program, Labor Relations, Social Acceptance Program, Site Security, Camp and Site Work Rules, and other activities of the physical site in compliance with Newmont Standards. 
  • Ensure the highest safety standards attainable are achieved through good safety management.  Oversee audits and reviews of the project safety management plan to seek continual improvement. Ensure all environmental guidelines and requirements are met.
  • Understand and assume responsibility for Owner’s deliverables to the Contractor including construction power, water, facilities, permits, and other site resources.
  • Liaise with operations on the progress and status of work for each facility.
  • Maintain direction and review construction contracting strategy proposed and implemented for sustainable capital projects.
  • Plans and coordinates with operations the use of mine owned equipment (i.e. cranes, manlifts) and outsourced equipment required for the execution of projects.
  • Ensure that Owner procured items are being expedited in a timely manner to meet the Project Schedule requirements.
  • Review the sequencing of activities, co-ordination procedures and systems, and the construction strategy proposed and implemented for the project.  Participate in construction reviews in early design effort.
  • Review and overview the procedure for tag outs, outages and tie-ins to maximize existing productivity, minimize safety risks and integrate with the Project Schedule.
  • Overview pre-commissioning undertaken by Implementation Contractors prior to handover to the Owner’s Project Team. Coordinate with operations for turnover/startup staffing and training.
  • Provides input to industrial relations to forecast resource levels for the successul  implementation of projects. 

 

 

Your training, skills, and experience checklist

 

Here is what we would need to see from you!

 

Bachelor of Science in an engineering discipline and/or Construction Management with 15 years practical experience in engineering, construction and mining operations.

A proven track record in project execution with direct hire experience and demonstrated commitment to the successful implementation and execution of projects under Newmont´s ES&H and Project Management standards. 

The incumbent will possess the personal qualities of professional leadership, sound judgement, strong interpersonal skills and business savvy.

Ability to think strategically; to influence and drive change.

Ability to mentor, coach and direct workgroup by establishing stretch goals for development of staff and promotion of quality study and project management.

Extensive experience on, and understanding of mining projects

Project management experience in international locations with exposure to multicultural environments (preferred).

Fluent English speaker (written and spoken), dutch preferred.

Where you will be located!


This position is located at Merian, project sites. Merian is a remote site located in a warm, humid tropical rainforest environment

The Merian mine is located in North-eastern Suriname, approx. 98 kilometers southeast of the capital city of Paramaribo; 60 kilometers south of Moengo.

Accommodation is in a camp/village environment near the workplace 

Suriname has a tropical climate with dry and two rainy seasons with anticipated tropical rainfall of 1.5m to 2.5m of rain per year.

This is an expat position, the individual is required to work 6 weeks at the site, 3 weeks off fly-in fly-out arrangement, being based ideally in the Americas or Europe. The incumbent is expected to spend most of her/his time in the field, with some office work.
