About This Role:

  • To carry out all in-pit geological activities and ore tracking to the right destination.

In This Role You Will:

Grade Control Planning & Execution

  • Plan grade control drilling and sampling activities in the field.
  • Supervise daily ore mining and ensure mining is done to geological standards (i.e. HW → FW, sheeting in ore, ore loss and dilution).
  • Supervise and direct blast hole drilling sequence.
  • Implement and monitor blast movement designs in the field.
  • Conduct blast hole logging and capture structural mapping data in the pit.
  • Track ore material movement in the field and ensure it is captured correctly in the dispatch system.
  • Support Short Term Planning (STP) to deliver the required feed grade to mill through accurate stockpiling and efficient blending.

 

Drilling

  • Conduct daily drill dig on-site visits to determine the rate of progression against specified targets and ensure drilling activity is carried out in line with Newmont’s Safety Standards.
  • Carry out geological logging of drill holes including geotechnical and structural data capture.

 

Data Collection and Quality Control

  • Capture all geological field data (core drilling, RC drilling, blasthole, density, grab samples, mapping, moisture content etc.)
  • Supervise QAQC field sample collection process.
  • Assist with lab audit reviews.

 

Health and Safety Management

  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.
  • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
  • Abide by and ensure geological technicians carry out activities according to Newmont’s Health and Safety principles.

 

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise the activities of geological technicians and samplers through allocated junior staff member(s) by:
    • prioritizing and allocating tasks / responsibilities.
    • checking and controlling the quality of work outputs.
    • providing on-the-job training, mentoring and coaching.
    • recommending further / relevant training courses and development actions.

Your Training, Skills & Experience:

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Bachelors’ degree in in Geology / Geological Engineering/Earth Science.

 

Additional Knowledge:

  • Sound understanding of Production Geology.

 

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 - 3 years’ experience within a Geology Production environment.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Sound computer literacy skills - MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Sound problem-solving skills.
  • Sound communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with database administration and capacity planning.
  • Strong planning, organizing and prioritizing skills.
  • Strong IT Programming, SQL Scripting, Reporting and System Management skills.
  • Knowledge User and System Administration of diverse technical mining applications.

Working Conditions:

  • Position is in the Ahafo North mine. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit at a desk for extended periods, climb stairs, walk and stand.
    • Work Environment: The noise level in the field environment is minimal. Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, high temperature, moving machinery, hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces, extreme weather conditions.
    • Protective Equipment (PPE): Work requires mandatory PPE such as helmet, goggles, high visible clothing, safety harness, ear plugs and dust mask according to working conditions.
