About This Role:

  • To lead the Sampling crews in the measurement and interpretation of data taken from sampling activities.

In This Role You Will:

Geological Sampling

  • Supervise Samplers to perform various daily sampling activities (i.e. Blast Hole, Trenches, Grab).
  • Operate Light Vehicles for sampling activities and Ditch Witch machine for cutting sample trenches.
  • Ensure sampling pegs are kept in their right positions and labeled for easy after drill pick-ups by survey.
  • Oversee sample sorting and submission at the Lab.
  • Ensure that sample bag numbering is done correctly to contribute to the accuracy of OC dig block grade estimations.
  • Ensure prioritization of samples to the Lab as and when required.
  • Perform limited geotechnical logging.
  • Oversee the configuration, operation and maintenance of sample instruments and equipment.
  • Stock-taking and assisting in ordering sampling consumables and other logistics for use in Ore control.
  • Ensure items needed by samplers are carried to the pit.
  • Drill site maintenance, including drainage, fencing, and sump during reserve conversion drilling.

 

Grade Control Geologist Support

  • Assist the Grade Control Geologist in the day-to-day in-pit geological activities (i.e. fixing of ore mark out, blasthole logging, blast movement installation and monitoring, etc.).

 

Data Collection and Quality Control

  • Ensure all sampling data is captured on sample submission sheet.
  • Assist in the capturing of all geological field data (core drilling, RC drilling, blasthole, density, grab samples, mapping, moisture content etc.).

 

Environment, Health and Safety Management

  • Accept personal responsibility for the health and safety of every employee under or assigned to his/her supervision.
  • Provide hands-on assistance during operations activities and ensuring that safe work practices are followed.
  • Abide by and support others in carrying out activities according to Newmont Environmental, Health and Safety principles.

 

Staff Supervision

  • Oversee that the Samplers complete all allocated tasks assigned on a shift.
  • Ensure effective communication among the sampling team.

Your Training, Skills & Experience Checklist:

Formal Qualification (including Professional Registrations):

  • Senior High School Certificate or West African Secondary School Certificate (WASSCE).

 

Additional Knowledge:

  • Prior knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs and other techniques for maximizing the output of samples is an added advantage.

 

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 - 3 years’ experience within a Mine Production / Geology environment.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Sound computer literacy skills - MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Sound troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Sound communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in coordination and delegation. 
  • Demonstrated experience in information monitoring and management.
  • Strong planning, organizing and prioritizing skills.
  • Sound time management skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Position is in the Ahafo North mine. The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representatives of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. 
    • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
    • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to sit at a desk for extended periods, climb stairs, walk and stand.
    • Work Environment: The noise level in the field environment is minimal. Occasional exposure to noise, fumes, high temperature, moving machinery, hazardous materials, sharp edges, dust, pinch-points, vibration, slippery surfaces, extreme weather conditions.
    • Protective Equipment (PPE): Work requires mandatory PPE such as helmet, goggles, high visible clothing, safety harness, ear plugs and dust mask according to working conditions.
